Cam Thomas scored 32 points, Dennis Schroder added 29 and the Brooklyn Nets beat the Milwaukee Bucks 115-102 on Sunday in their home opener to give coach Jordi Fernandez his first victory.

The Nets pulled away in the fourth quarter after opening with two road losses in their first season under Fernandez, a native of Badalona, Spain.

Thomas scored 11 in the final period to surpass the 30 points he had averaged in the first two games.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Bucks, who have dropped two straight after winning their opener. Oakland’s Damian Lillard scored 21 points and Bobby Portis Jr. had 16 points and 10 boards.

Maxey scores 45, keys 76ers’ OT win >> Tyrese Maxey scored 10 of Philadelphia’s 13 overtime points and finished with a season-high 45 as the 76ers beat the Pacers 118-114 in Indiana for their first win of the season.

Pacers All-Star Tyrese Haliburton rebounded from a scoreless Friday night in New York with 22 points, including a circus 3-pointer with 3.5 seconds left to force overtime. But he missed two free throws late in overtime which would have tied the score at 116.

Grant leads Blazers past Pelicans >> Jerami Grant scored 28 points to lead the Portland Trail Blazers to a 125-103 home victory over the New Orleans Pelicans for their first win of the season.

Anfernee Simons pitched in 27 points and six assists for the Blazers.

CJ McCollum had 27 points to lead the Pelicans in the second of a two-game set against his former team.

NHL

Draisaitl scores in OT to lift Oilers >> Leon Draisaitl scored his second goal of the game 18 seconds into overtime and the Edmonton Oilers beat the Red Wings 3-2 in Detroit.

Evan Bouchard also scored and Calvin Pickard stopped 25 shots to help the Oilers win their second straight. Connor McDavid and defenseman Mattias Ekholm each had two assists.

College football

Rice fires coach Bloomgren >> Rice fired seventh-year coach Mike Bloomgren, a former Stanford assistant, with the program headed toward a 10th straight losing season following losses in six of eight games.

Former Cal and Stanford assistant Pete Alamar, the associate head coach and special teams coordinator, will serve as interim head coach for the rest of the season, athletic director Tommy McClelland said.

Bloomgren was 24-52 and won six games in only one season.

Miami cracks Top 5 >> Miami edged ahead of Texas and climbed to No. 5 in The Associated Press Top 25 college football poll, its highest ranking since 2017, and Notre Dame, BYU and Texas A&M all moved into the top 10.

Oregon, Georgia, Penn State and Ohio State remained the top four teams, and Washington State (No. 22) and Colorado (No. 23) entered the Top 25 for the first time this season.

Miami improved to 8-0 with its win over Florida State on Saturday. The Hurricanes have been in the top 10 eight straight polls but not this high since they spent two weeks at No. 2 in November 2017.

Motorsports

Reddick wins at Homestead >> Michael Jordan won a championship in Phoenix in 1993. Tyler Reddick ensured that his car owner will have a chance to win another title there this year.

Reddick went high and overtook Ryan Blaney on the final turn to win at Homestead-Miami to secure a spot in NASCAR’s winner-take-all finale in Arizona in two weeks. Reddick led 98 of the 267 laps, the last of them the one that mattered most.

“The little kid drove his (butt) off,” said Jordan, whose 1993 title — the third of six NBA titles with the Chicago Bulls — came in Phoenix against the Suns.

Blaney was second and Denny Hamlin — a part-owner of Reddick’s car was third. Playoff drivers took the top six spots, with Christopher Bell fourth, Chase Elliott fifth and William Byron said.

Reddick and Joey Logano now are assured two of the four spots in NASCAR’s final four at Phoenix.

Logano was the only of the eight playoff drivers who came to Homestead assured of a berth in the season finale.

The other seven playoff drivers all jousted toward the front for the majority of the 267 laps. Hamlin led with two laps to go, Larson with one lap left, and then Reddick at the end.

Sainz wins Mexico City GP >> Carlos Sainz Jr. won the Mexico City Grand Prix for the first time and Lando Norris closed the gap in the Formula 1 championship race with Max Verstappen.

Verstappen finished sixth, but Norris snatched second place from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc with eight laps remaining. The finishes were a 10-point swing for Norris, who now trails Verstappen by 47 points with four races remaining.

WNBA

Indiana fires coach Sides >> The Indiana Fever fired coach Christie Sides, the organization announced. Sides went 33-47 in her two seasons with the squad, including going 20-20 this season. The Fever made the playoffs as the sixth seed and were swept in the first round by the Connecticut Sun.

The Fever have a strong young core led by Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston.

Echavarria claims second PGA win >> Nico Echavarria claimed the Zozo Championship in Inzai City, Japan for his second PGA Tour victory, shooting 3-under 67 to win by a shot over Max Greyserman and Justin Thomas.

Ruoning’s 65 earns her win in Malaysia >> Starting her final round in a three-way tie for the lead, Yin Ruoning shot a 7-under 65 to win the LPGA Tour’s Maybank Championship in Malaysia by one stroke for her second title this month.

Yin, of China, finished at 23-under 265 after a safe two-putt on the final hole.
