A man has pleaded guilty to choking and sexually assaulting a woman in Boulder in September.
Vincent Isaac Cortez, 24, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault — strangulation. The other charges he initially faced, sexual assault, third-degree assault knowingly and recklessly causing injury, and obstructing a peace officer, were dismissed.
He remains in custody on a $300,000 bond and is set for his sentencing hearing on Aug. 13.
According to an affidavit, at 3 a.m. on Sept. 13, Boulder officers responded to a call of a woman ringing a neighbor’s doorbell and knocking on their front door, asking for help, saying that she had been assaulted over two days.
Officers learned that on Sept. 11, Cortez reportedly choked the woman inside her car in a parking lot. The woman told police that she lost consciousness and believed she was going to die. She said after regaining consciousness, she asked Cortez why he did it and he choked her again while she pleaded with him not to kill her.
The next day, Cortez reportedly threw the woman around a room and sexually assaulted her.
On Sept. 13, Cortez was arrested following a standoff with Boulder police.
