Man arrested for reportedly assaulting a police officer

A man was arrested Sunday for reportedly assaulting a police officer after trying to steal groceries from Whole Foods grocery store, 2905 Pearl St., according to police.

Brian Costello, 35, was arrested on suspicion of robbery, second-degree burglary, harassment, obstructing a police officer, second-degree assault on a peace officer and resisting arrest.

A police officer who was working off-duty as a security guard was at the grocery store around 5 p.m. when she saw Costello, who was previously banned from entering, walk into the store, according to Boulder Police Department spokeswoman Dionne Waugh.

Waugh said that when police attempted to arrest Costello while he was trying to leave the store with a basket of groceries he had not paid for, he attacked the officer and a security guard.

The officer was taken to the hospital to receive treatment for minor injuries to her hand, and Costello was taken to jail, according to Waugh.

Police want public’s help to identify three people

Boulder police want the public’s help to identify three people reportedly involved in a theft investigation, according to the Boulder Police Department’s Facebook post.

A victim reported that an unknown person stole her purse, which contained credit cards that were later used at multiple stores in Boulder.

Sheriff: Man dies after apparent accidental shooting in Gunbarrel

A man died Thursday afternoon after what appears to be an accidental shooting in Gunbarrel, officials said.

According to Boulder County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Carrie Haverfield, a report came in about a 60-year-old man who shot himself while he was cleaning or repairing his gun just after 12:30 p.m. Thursday. A more specific location was not immediately available.

Emergency crews close Cherryvale Road to respond to gas leak

Emergency crews closed Cherryvale Road between Baseline Road and Simmons Drive Thursday evening to respond to a gas leak, according to Boulder County Sheriff’s Office posts on X.

Crews said they would close the roads in the area until 12:30 a.m.; however, they did not order evacuations.

Officers advise drivers to use alternate routes and follow detours around the area. Responding agencies include the Boulder Emergency Squad, Mountain View Fire Rescue and the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.
