AUSTIN, Texas >> Xavier Worthy was released Saturday after a district attorney in Texas declined to pursue charges against the Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver following an arrest in which he had been accused of felony domestic violence.
Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick told the Austin American-Statesman his office had spoken with witnesses and was not accepting the case at this time. He also said Worthy and his lawyers were fully cooperating with the investigation.
Records showed that Worthy had been arrested Friday by deputies and held in the county jail on a charge of assault on a family or household member in which their breath was impeded, or choking in common terms. The online court listing for the case was updated to “dismissed/declined” later Saturday.
Williamson County includes parts of Austin, where Worthy played college football at the University of Texas.
In a statement, Worthy’s attorneys, Chip Lewis and Sam Bassett, said their client was innocent of the charge against him. They said the allegation was made by a female who had been living in Worthy’s home, and that she had been asked to leave the home multiple times over the last two weeks “upon discovery of her infidelity.”
“She has refused to vacate the residence and made a number of extortive efforts prior to resorting to this baseless allegation against Mr. Worthy,” the lawyers’ statement said. “The complainant further destroyed a room in the residence, scratched Mr. Worthy’s face and ripped out parts of his hair, which there is photographic evidence of. Worthy told law enforcement at the time of the incident he did not want to press charges against the complainant.”
Chiefs bring back wide receiver “Hollywood” Brown >> The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing back wide receiver Marquise Brown on a one-year deal worth up to $11 million, a person familiar with the contract negotiations told The Associated Press on Saturday.
The Chiefs signed Brown to a similar one-year contract last season, when “Hollywood” Brown hoped he could parlay a big season with quarterback Patrick Mahomes into a lucrative long-term contract. Instead, he dislocated a shoulder joint on the first snap of the preseason, and surgery kept Brown out until Week 15 of the regular season.
Brown had nine catches for 91 yards in two games before sitting out the final week of the season. He added five catches for 50 yards in the playoffs, including two for 15 yards in the Chiefs’ 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl.
Bills sign edge rusher Greg Rousseau to 4-year extension>> The Buffalo Bills on Saturday signed edge rusher Greg Rousseau to a four-year contract extension that’s worth up to $80 million in the team’s latest move to lock up its young core.
The Bills announced the signing, and a person with knowledge of the contact revealed its value to The Associated Press. Also, long snapper Reid Ferguson is staying in Buffalo after signing a four-year contract before he was eligible to become a free agent next week. The 30-year-old Ferguson is the longest-active tenured player on the Bills roster in having spent his entire eight-year NFL career with the team.
Mike Gesicki agrees to 3-year, $25.5 million deal with Bengals>> Mike Gesicki is returning to the Cincinnati Bengals after agreeing to a three-year contract worth $25.5 million on Saturday, a person familiar with the contract negotiations told The Associated Press.
Gesicki had a successful first season in Cincinnati. He was third on the team in receptions with 65 for 665 yards and two touchdowns.
Gesicki will be entering his eighth season in 2025. He was a second-round selection by Miami in the 2018 draft and spent five seasons with the Dolphins before going to New England in 2023 and then Cincinnati.
Giants re-sign Tommy DeVito to a 1-year deal and right now he’s the only QB on their roster >> The New York Giants now officially have a quarterback under contract on their roster.
The team announced Saturday it re-signed Tommy DeVito, who was scheduled to become an exclusive rights free agent.
DeVito, whose one-year deal is worth $1.03 million, has started eight games for the Giants since joining the team as an undrafted free agent in 2023 out of Illinois.
Backups Drew Lock and Tim Boyle are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents next week, leaving DeVito alone atop New York’s quarterback depth chart — at least for now.
The Giants are expected to target a veteran in free agency, with Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson possibilities.
