A Saturday morning train derailment in Valparaiso after a train struck an unoccupied vehicle rerouted traffic through much of the city, and a few crossings remain closed for the next few days for cleanup, officials said.

There were no injuries or hazardous material involvement and there was no risk to the public, according to a release from the city.

To complete cleanup efforts, the Canadian National crossing at Froberg Road is closed and will remain closed for several days. Lafayette Street and Yellowstone Road also will remain closed.

Valparaiso Police announced in a Facebook post about 7 a.m. that a train struck an unoccupied vehicle earlier, blocking several railroad crossings along the Canadian National track.

The impacted intersections began at Franklin Street and went west to Yellowstone Road.

“CN apologizes to motorists and the broader community for the inconvenience. CN wishes to thank local emergency services for their assistance,” according to a CN statement provided to the city.
