A wrong-way driver from Macomb County is accused of being intoxicated when he was involved in a head-on crash on the Southfield Freeway (M-39) over the weekend that resulted in one injury.

Michigan State Police said the crash took place about 12:15 a.m. Sunday on the Southfield Freeway near Joy Road in Detroit.

According to a news release, police dispatchers began receiving phone calls about a motorist driving north in the southbound lanes of the freeway. As troopers headed to the area, dispatchers were notified of a crash at Joy.

State Police said when they arrived at the crash scene, both drivers were alert. A passenger in the non-at-fault vehicle, a 30-year-old Detroit woman, suffered a lower body injury and was transported to a local hospital for medical care. The driver of the wrong-way vehicle, a 39-year-old Eastpointe man, was arrested for drunk driving, said F/Lt. Mike Shaw. His name was not released. The freeway was closed for a time as police conducted their investigation.

“This driver risked the lives of other drivers and road users when they got behind the wheel drunk,” Shaw said in the release. “There are just too many ways to get around if you decide to drink. Getting behind the wheel impaired is unacceptable.”

The investigation is pending blood results taken from the accused driver, police said. Once completed an investigator’s report will be forwarded to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for review and possible issuance of criminal charges, Shaw added.
