A Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit train fatally struck a pedestrian in San Rafael on Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred at about 3 p.m. south of the intersection of North San Pedro Road and Los Ranchitos Road. The conductor saw the pedestrian and sounded a horn several times as an alert, San Rafael police Lt. Scott Eberle said.
The police department is investigating the incident. The county coroner’s office has yet to release the name of the pedestrian.
The train was traveling north from Larkspur to Santa Rosa with 35 passengers and two employees on board, said Julia Gonzalez, a SMART spokesperson. None was injured, she said.
During the preliminary investigation, the rail service provided shuttles to transport passengers between the San Rafael and Civic Center stations.
