An East Chicago man was sentenced to 63 years Friday for a man’s shooting death during the city’s Calumet Day celebrations last year, records show.

Glenn Keller, 34, was convicted last month of murder for the July 23 shooting death of Shaquille K. Russell, 27, during Calumet Day celebrations on the 4800 block of Alexander Avenue in East Chicago.

Court records indicate he plans to appeal.

Russell was shot multiple times around 9:30 p.m., according to court records. He was pronounced dead at St. Catherine’s Hospital. Keller wore a black sweatshirt with red letters and a white undershirt and jeans during the shooting, according to the affidavit.

Black and white footage played Tuesday in the courtroom appeared to show one man chasing another before the man shot fell forward on the street. Other security videos in color showed a man fitting Keller’s description and clothing.

A witness said Russell confronted Keller the day before, wanting to protect someone after Keller had made a pass at them, according to court records.

The trial was held before Judge Salvador Vasquez. Defense lawyer Marc Laterzo represented Keller, while Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys Keith Anderson and Maureen Koonce were assigned.
