Dr. Jack Farrell, of Boulder, Colorado, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2025, at Frasier Meadows Retirement Community. Jack was deeply loved for his devotion to family and friends, as well as his deep appreciation for all of God's creatures. His loyalty, adventurous spirit, and passion for writing will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
Born in New Jersey in 1939, he grew up in Lynn, Massachusetts, excelling at St. Mary's High School before earning scholarships to Boston College and The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he earned a Ph.D. in Psychology.
Jack began his career as a research psychologist at the Army Research Institute before becoming head of clinical psychology at Patuxent Institution and the U.S. Soldiers' and Airmen's Home. He later worked with the Maryland State Prison System, and ran a private practice at the Family Life Center in Columbia, Maryland.
An accomplished author, Jack wrote several books and numerous travel articles for his local Maryland newspaper. He was particularly proud of his book Voices Behind the Wall, which reflects on his work with the prison system. His most recent book, Rouge Science, is scheduled to be published this year.
Jack had a deep love for poetry and served on the board of the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society. He proudly hosted the annual Irish Evening, an event that supported the organization's non-profit educational mission.
Jack is survived by his son, John Farrell of Alexandria, Virginia; his daughter, Helene Farrell Hall, and her husband Michael T. Hall, of The Plains, Virginia, and Captiva Island, Florida; and his sisters, Bett McCarthy and Eileen Farrell, both of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. He was predeceased by his first wife, Jane Manson Farrell, his second wife, Nancy Colburn Farrell, as well as his sister Catherine Farrell. Jack will be remembered by his nieces, nephews, goddaughter, Nancy's family, and Jane's family.
Jack and Nancy, shared a love for outdoor activities, including skiing and sea kayaking, pursuing adventure in their international travels.
Jack's funeral, burial, and reception will be at 11am on April 10th, 2025 at Sacred Heart of Mary, 6739 South Boulder Road, Boulder, CO sacredheartofmary.org.
