Cal running back Jaydn Ott scored two touchdowns in the Bears’ spring showcase on Saturday. Three days later he was on his way out of Berkeley for Norman, Oklahoma.
The University of Oklahoma football program welcomed Ott into the Sooners fold with a social media post on Tuesday. Ott had entered the transfer portal a day earlier in advance of the opening of the spring window.
Ott was ranked the No. 3 player in his position unit in the transfer portal according to 247Sports. The senior had a down season in 2024 after two stellar years to open his collegiate career. An ankle injury hampered him last fall as he rushed for only 385 yards on 116 carries after amassing 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2023, when he earned All-Pac-12 honors. He was also a Freshman All-American in 2022 after breaking out with 897 yards on 170 carries, including a 274-yard, three-touchdown game against Arizona.
Ott’s partner in the Bears’ backfield last season, quarterback Fernando Mendoza, transferred in the winter window to Indiana.
At that time, Ott reaffirmed his commitment to Cal. But on Monday, a post on his Instagram Story read “No loyalty to stagnation,” hinting that a change could be coming.
After losing in the LA Bowl last December to UNLV, Cal finished the season 6-7. The Bears have not finished with a winning record since 2019.
Cal coach Justin Wilcox rebuilt his offensive staff this offseason, bringing in former Boise State and Auburn coach Bryan Harsin as the offensive coordinator and adding former Hawaii and Washington State coach Nick Rolovich as an offensive assistant. But the big names apparently did not do enough to keep Ott from looking elsewhere.
Behind Ott on the Bears’ depth chart is McClymonds graduate Jaivian Thomas, who had 626 yards and seven touchdowns on 100 carries as a sophomore last season.
Badgers lose key lineman >> Wisconsin offensive tackle Kevin Heywood is expected to miss all of the upcoming season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in spring practice. Heywood, the Badgers’ projected starter at left tackle, hurt his knee in practice late last week.

Restraining order temporarily halts academic cuts at Sonoma State >> Sonoma State University has been ordered to halt plans to cut six academic departments and eliminate 22 majors to close a nearly $24 million budget deficit, although the temporary restraining order doesn’t address the school’s plans to scrap its entire NCAA Division II athletic program, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat reported.
The order will last until May 1. Tuesday’s ruling came in response to a request from a group of seven Sonoma State student-athletes who had filed the petition for the emergency order seeking a halt to the sports cuts. The same group sued college and California State University administrators in March.

Dolphins shopping Ramsey >> The Miami Dolphins are pursuing trade options for All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey, general manager Chris Grier confirmed. Ramsey did not ask for a trade, and he didn’t ask for more money, Grier clarified, but after weeks of conversations with Ramsey’s representation, both sides agreed it would be best to potentially move on.
Miami has been in talks with a few teams about a potential trade. Grier declined to go into detail about the contents of those discussions and did not give a clear reason for potentially parting ways with Ramsey.
Smith to retire as as Cowboy >> Tyron Smith is set to retire with the Dallas Cowboys after the perennial Pro Bowl left tackle spent his final season with the New York Jets. The 34-year-old reportedly intends to sign a ceremonial one-day contract in order to retire with the franchise that drafted him in the first round 14 years ago with the No. 9 overall pick. Smith’s retirement comes a little more than a month after right guard Zack Martin made the same announcement following an 11-season career spent entirely with the Cowboys.

2028 Games sites include Dodger Stadium, Trestles Beach >> The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will feature baseball at Dodger Stadium in its return to the program with surfing and cricket held outside the city as part of an updated venue plan released by the organizing committee.
Surfing will be at Trestles Beach, a renowned collection of surfing spots between northern San Diego County and southern San Clemente in Orange County. It formerly hosted a World Surfing League competition.
Cricket will return to the Olympics for the first time in a century in a temporary structure at the Fairgrounds in Pomona. Host committee chairman Casey Wasserman had initially said it was likely to be played on the East Coast, which would have better aligned with the time zone in India, home of the sport’s biggest fan base.
Squash will make its Olympic debut on the Universal Studios lot, famous as the setting for movies and television shows. Beach volleyball is going to Long Beach after negotiations fell through with the city of Santa Monica. Triathlon is moving from Long Beach to famed Venice Beach on the west side of LA.
