Drawing political lines in the sand

More than 1,000 people stand on the sand on Saturday at Main Beach in Santa Cruz to create a human banner. Indivisible Santa Cruz County enlisted the help of Brad Newsham and Travis Van Brasch, who have organized human banners at Ocean Beach in San Francisco for the past two decades. The rainbow-themed action included the words “Resist” and “Not Going Back” to emphasize a connection with Santa Cruz Pride Week, which will hold a celebratory parade on Pacific Avenue on Sunday morning. Indivisible Santa Cruz County is a grassroots movement that works to “elect progressive leaders, resisting authoritarian and regressive agendas, and advancing bold, inclusive policies that reflect our community’s values.” The national organization was created shortly after the 2016 election by former congressional staffers and husband and wife team Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin. There are thousands of chapters across the country that use the Indivisible tactics to affect policy change and apply pressure to elected officials, according to its website.
