Dave died peacefully at home on September 15, 2024 surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren after a two-year battle with esophagus and brain cancer Dave was born on December 5, 1948 in Davenport, Iowa to Vern Lowell Trumbo and Gwendolyn Vaughne Greenway Trumbo. He married the love of his life, Vicki Dana on June 13, 1970 in Manson, Iowa. He graduated from Fort Dodge High School in Fort Dodge, Iowa in 1967 and the University of Iowa with a BS in Pharmacy in 1972. He enlisted in the US Army in 1972 and was Chief of Pharmacy at the 34th General Hospital in Muenchweiler, Germany. During their time in Germany, their daughter, Megan was born.
In 1976 Dave and Vicki moved to Lafayette, Colorado where Dave was Pharmacy Manager at Hiway Drug and Bungalow Drug in Louisville. In 1981, they welcomed their son, Andrew into the family.
They owned Hiway Drug from 1983 to 1988.
He then worked for Albertsons, and Walgreens and owned Community Medical Center Pharmacy. In his later years, he worked for CareKinesis.
Dave was the kindest, most generous and caring person, who loved to help people in any way that he could.
For his community, this showed up in his service to Lafayette as a citizen and also as a member of Lafayette City Council, Lafayette Planning Commission, Community Medical Center Board of Directors, Boulder Community Health Foundation and Governing Board.
Alongside, his wife, Vicki, in her 34-year career at the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, he was an integral part of every event.
More importantly, though, he was an incredible husband, father and grandfather.
He and Vicki were married for 54 wonderful years filled with laughter, hard work, and travels all over the world. He was a devoted and connected dad, quick to bring a laugh or lend a listening ear.
Affectionately known as "Papa" by all his grandkids, he most cherished taking family vacations together and having everyone home at the holidays. He loved watching his grandchildren do the things they loved - whether that be watching a musical performance, attending a sporting event, or just having a conversation about their passions. No matter what it was, he made being a family the most important thing and that will live on in a way that makes his love immortal.
Dave is survived by his wife, Vicki; his daughter Megan Trumbo McDonald, her husband Greg McDonald and their kids, Tate, Hayden, and Clare; his son, Andrew David Trumbo, his wife Jessica Peterson, and his kids, Alex, Presley, & Barrett; his sister, Joyce Douglas and nephew, Justin Douglas, and his wife, April and daughters, Alexandra and Jacquelyn.
Dave's Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, October 5th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 3700 Baseline Rd., Boulder, CO 80303. This will be a festive celebration, so we encourage all to wear colorful clothing!
Dave's passion was his flower garden. Instead of sending flowers to us, please buy flowers and give them to someone you love or buy a plant for your garden and when it blooms next year, you will think of him. The last words he wrote were, "Keep My Garden Blooming" and we intend to do just that.
