CU Boulder breaks ground on new $175 million academic building

The University of Colorado Boulder has begun construction on its new $175 million chemistry and applied math facility, which will be the university’s first new academic building since 2018.

Located on the southeast side of the Business Field along Regent Drive, the building will span about 139,000 square feet. It will create an academic home for the chemistry and applied math departments. Construction began in June, following a delay due to cost estimates that exceeded the university’s budget.

The new academic building is expected to be completed in the summer of 2027.

Woman arrested in fatal I-25 pedestrian hit-and-run

A 29-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident involving death in a Denver hit-and-run crash that killed a man changing a tire on the shoulder of Interstate 25.

Marisol Infante was arrested and booked into the Downtown Detention Center on Thursday morning, court records show.

Denver police say Infante was driving a black Toyota 4Runner on southbound I-25 on Saturday morning when she hit 52-year-old Carlos Mercado Arzola, who was changing a tire on the right shoulder between West Sixth Avenue and West Alameda Avenue.

Arzola died from multiple blunt force injuries at the scene, according to the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner.

Infante was charged with driving under the influence in a separate case after she was arrested by University of Colorado Boulder police on May 8, court records show. The case was pending in Boulder County District Court.

She was previously charged with a DUI in Boulder County in 2021 and pleaded guilty to driving while ability impaired as part of a plea deal.

City seeking public input on Civic Area project

The public has the chance to chime in on further development of downtown Boulder’s Civic Area next week.

An engagement event on the second phase of planned upgrades to the downtown Boulder area will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Monday in Central Park, 1212 Canyon Blvd.

The project relates to the city’s 2015 Civic Area plan and aims to bring more public activity to the downtown area. The boundaries of the project area are roughly 9th Street, Canyon Boulevard, 14th Street and Arapahoe Avenue.

There will be interactive stations, questionnaires, maps and family-friendly activities for attendees. There will also be free popsicles and a concert from local children’s musicians Jeff and Paige.
