Cabrillo College freshman forward Gabby Brooks scored a game-high 27 points, and the short-handed Seahawks women’s basketball team needed every one in its playoff opener Wednesday night in Aptos.

The No. 16 seed Seahawks (19-10 overall), who suited up just six players, were outscored 23-9 in the fourth quarter but held on for a 62-60 win over No. 17 Modesto in the first round of the CCCAA NorCal Regional playoffs.

It was the Seahawks’ first playoff win since 2018-19.

Cabrillo, the third-place finisher in the Coast Conference South Division, played without freshman forward Gabby Delacruz (torn ACL) and sophomore center Morgan Wilson (bone spurs).

Sophomore forward Renee Parker, a Soquel alumna, scored 16 points for the Seahawks, who led 28-20 at the half and outscored the Pirates 25-17 in the third quarter. Sophomore guard Jade Crum added 11 points for the Seahawks.

Freshman guard Emma Gilmore made four 3-pointers and scored 25 points for the Pirates (14-14), who tied for fourth place in the Big 8 Conference. Freshman guard/forward Izabella Sanchez scored 13 points.

Cabrillo plays No. 1 Sequoias (28-0), the Central Valley Conference champion, in Visalia in the second round on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

Men’s basketball

At Feather River 79, Cabrillo 72 >> The injury plagued Seahawks, seeded No. 23, fell short in their upset bid in the first round of the CCCAA NorCal Regional playoffs on Wednesday.

Cabrillo (15-14) was without all-conference point guard Walzel Evans.

Freshman guard Suliman Koko and freshman forward Dai’shaun Buie each scored 22 points to lead the Seahawks. Sophomore guard Max Parmigiani made four 3-pointers in the second half and finished with 19 points.

“Really proud of the fight this group showed, long travel day, missing an important piece, pretty banged up group and had every excuse to lay down,” Seahawks coach James Page said. “Instead, they showed their character and battled til the clock hit zero.”

Freshman forward Damonte Duhart scored 20 points to lead the Golden Eagles. Freshman guard Jah’kiaus Jones scored 11 points and freshman forward Carson Jensen added 10 points.

No. 10 Feather River (18-10) plays at No. 7 Skyline (22-6) in the second round on Saturday.

High school baseball

At Sacred Heart Prep 3, Scotts Valley 2; 8 inn >> The Falcons scored in the eighth inning, but gave up a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning and lost their season opener Tuesday.

Scotts Valley (0-1) plays at Menlo-Atherton on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

College baseball

Solano 11, at Cabrillo 6 >> Kaiden Hoapili had four hits, one RBI, and a run scored in the Seahawks’ nonconference loss Tuesday.

Nico Hilger had two hits, two RBI, and a run scored for Cabrillo. Adrian Castaneda, Oscar Knapp, and Jacob Fiorenza each had two hits and a run scored.

Peyten Czekalewski pitched five innings and earned the win. Gabe Lauricella took the loss.

Cabrillo (4-10) plays at Chabot (7-7) on Thursday at 2 p.m.

Boys lacrosse
