OAKLAND >> An armed carjacking suspect was shot by police Friday afternoon in East Oakland, authorities said.
The condition of the man shot was not immediately available. He was taken to a hospital.
There were no reports of officers being injured.
The shooting happened just before 1 p.m. in the area of 105th Avenue and International Boulevard.
Additional details about what led up to the shooting were not available as of press time.
Minnie Talavera said she was at a gas station at 102nd Avenue and International Boulevard when she saw a motorcyclist going eastbound on International “flying through a red light.” She said that a motorcycle officer started chasing the cyclist.
She said she started running in the same direction and saw the man on the motorcycle crash into the center divider.
Talavera said she then heard an officer say, “ ‘Hold up, put your hands up in the air,’ or something like that,” before hearing gunfire that prompted her to run around a corner for safety.
She said she thought she heard about five gunshots, and when she looked around the corner she saw “a man in the street bleeding.”
Numerous streets in the area were shut down while police investigated, including canvassing for witnesses.
