American basketball player Shirinia Shi is the Bay Area News Group’s girls high school athlete of the week and San Mateo basketball player Zidane Auzarang is the boys athlete of the week for Jan. 6-11.
In online voting that ended at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Shi finished with 45.88% of the vote. Acalanes basketball player Ariana Hallstrom took second and Evergreen Valley soccer player Mariah Betancourt was third.
In the boys poll, Auzarang had 31.79% of the vote to finish ahead of runner-up Isaac Sisay, a basketball player from Milpitas. Head-Royce basketball player Micah Nyamuzuwe was third.
Shi scored 35 points to lead American to a 68-55 win over Mission San Jose as the Eagles improved to 12-2 overall and 3-1 in Mission Valley Athletic League play.
Auzarang, a senior, scored 21 points in San Mateo’s 45-35 win over El Camino. The Bearcats began this week with a record of 9-4 overall and 2-0 in their league.
