Aptos High’s girls volleyball team was swept by visiting Christopher, 25-21, 25-19, 25-23, in a competitive nonleague match on Monday evening.

Sophomore Ella Dueck, returning Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League Freshman of the Year, led the Mariners with 16 kills.

“We’re really young,” Aptos coach Hunter Zeng said. “We just played three games back-to-back and two were league champions. We have three new setters in Reve Maguire, Isabella Magana and Mady Reed.

They’re all first-year varsity players and they are working hard to build a connection with Ella. Tonight was the best it has looked. I’m really proud of them. Chloe Luis is my libero. She started last year. She brings a lot of leadership and steadies the team.”

Aptos led most of the third set and extended the advantage to 17-13. However, the visiting Cougars (1-1) rallied to tie matters at 20 and pulled it out for the sweep.

The Mariners (0-3) host Hollister on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
