The Ledson Fire burning east of Santa Rosa near North Pythian Road in the Kenwood area was 80% contained Wednesday morning, July 15, as firefighters continued extinguishing remaining hotspots within the fire perimeter, Cal Fire officials said.

The wildfire remained at 16.5 acres after holding within established containment lines for a second consecutive night, according to Cal Fire spokesperson Jason Clay.

About 45 firefighters remained assigned to the incident Wednesday, including four fire engines, two hand crews and two water tenders, Clay said.

“Significant progress has been made,” Clay said. “Crews will remain on scene until the fire is fully contained and all remaining hot spots are secured.”

The fire ignited shortly after 1 p.m. Monday near North Pythian Road at the northern end of Sonoma Valley on the western slope of the Mayacamas Mountains.

Firefighters stopped the fire’s forward spread Monday afternoon, allowing crews to shift their focus to strengthening containment lines and mopping up hot spots.

The fire was 45% contained Tuesday morning before reaching 80% Wednesday.

The blaze burned through vegetation within the footprint of the 2017 Nuns Fire and the 2020 Glass Fire, leaving firefighters to work carefully around heavy concentrations of dead and downed trees left by the previous wildfires.

Evacuation orders issued Monday afternoon for Zone SON-3H3 were downgraded to a warning before being lifted Monday evening. No structures were reported damaged.

The Hardin Fire, which broke out shortly after the Ledson Fire on Monday near Pope Canyon Road in the Pope Valley area of Napa County, was 95% contained Wednesday morning and remained at 78.6 acres, according to Cal Fire. The cause of both fires remains under investigation.
