LONG BEACH — Wilson trailed Poly about as long as it possibly could Friday.
As extra time ticked on, Poly fans implored the referee to blow the final whistle, while Wilson fans were urging their team not to give up.
With Jackrabbits goalkeeper Noel Gutierrez out of the goal expecting to scoop up a loose ball and likely end the game, the ball instead ricocheted off a Poly defender to Wilson’s Casey Pettyjohn, who turned and launched a desperation shot into the top corner of the empty goal to earn the Bruins a 2-2 tie.
“We had the momentum the whole half,” Pettyjohn said. “They were on their heels, and we got the ball in the box. I knew the goal was open so I took the shot and it just went it. It feels amazing.”
In addition to his tying goal, Pettyjohn assisted on Wilson’s first goal, scored by freshman Lio Rodriguez.
Wilson goalkeeper Grayson Gilmore stopped 4 of 6 shots.
Poly jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half.
The Jackrabbits scored their first goal after a long crossing pass bounced into the Wilson box and deflected to Anthony Ruan, who pounded a low, skipping shot past Gilmore for a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.
Poly scored again eight minutes later when Joshua Martinez ran down the Wilson sideline and lofted a crossing pass to a sliding Damian Gonzalez, who redirected the ball into the net for a 2-0 lead.
In addition to goals from Gonzalez and Ruan, Martinez added an assist and Gutierrez stopped 5 of 7 Wilson shots.
It was strong start for Poly, which scored double the number of goals in eight minutes against Gilmore than the rest of the Moore League had combined through six games.
Wilson started its comeback five minutes into the second half when Pettyjohn landed a corner kick near the back post of the Poly goal and Rodriguez headed a bouncing ball into the Jackrabbits net.
The second half of the game saw an increase in physicality that resulted in multiple yellow cards for both teams.
The referee even delivered a warning to the Poly fans.
In the third minute of extra time, Poly’s Matthew Sanchez received a red card, disqualifying him from the rest of the game, and leaving his team down a man for what seemed like would be just the final seconds of a Poly victory.
Pettyjohn converted the tying goal to draw the Bruins even less than a minute later.
“We knew we were 2-0 down,” Pettyjohn said. “We play like that every game. We talk about we just have to start 2-0 and bring the momentum and they weren’t ready for it.”
Poly coach Carlos Casillas was justifiably stunned after the game.
“I’m processing right now,” Casillas said. “I’m still thinking about the end.
“It’s hard to think about it right now when I have to regroup my kids. It just threw everybody off. It (stinks) for our kids, putting in the work out there. All of a sudden, we get all these cards. It (stinks) for the boys.”
