Former Mater Dei girls basketball coach Kevin Kiernan says his coaching career is not over.

At the inaugural Kiernan Klassic showcase at Mater Dei on Saturday, Kiernan was asked if he is retired as a coach.

“No. I don’t think so,” said Kiernan, who holds the California record for most coaching victories with 900. “I think I’ll coach somewhere again down the road. Not here (at Mater Dei), but somewhere down the line, I’ll jump back in a little bit, I think, as long as I’m healthy.”

“Maybe (I’ll coach) youth kids,” he added. “Depends on what’s there.”

Kiernan, 65, resigned after last season, citing health reasons and a desire to concentrate on his ongoing athletic director duties at Mater Dei.

He was replaced by Jody Wynn, the former Washington and Long Beach State coach who played at Brea Olinda and USC.

Kiernan shared two reasons why he wouldn’t want to return to the sideline at Mater Dei.

“One, Jody is awesome and she’s made this job her own and I’m here to support her,” he said. “And two, I don’t know if I want to coach trying to win a national championship every year. It’s very draining.”

“(I) definitely miss (coaching),” Kiernan added, “but it’s fun to watch Jody work.”

In 17 years at Mater Dei, Kiernan guided the Monarchs to two national titles, three state championships, six CIF-SS crowns and 17 Trinity League titles.
