APTOS >> The Cabrillo College women’s basketball team, which rebounded from a 3-24 campaign a year earlier and secured its first playoff win since 2018-19, is looking for a new head coach.

Tony Marcopulos, who four years ago stepped down as the Seahawks’ men’s basketball coach after a successful 20-year career, filled in this season as the women’s coach after the school was unable to secure one.

After leading the Seahawks (19-11 overall) to third place in the Coast Conference South Division and the second round of the 3C2A NorCal Regional playoffs, Marcopulos met with athletics director Mark Ramsey and confirmed that his first season back in coaching was also his last.

“He has a had a good run,” Ramsey said. “He’s a great coach and a great recruiter. We sat down after the end of the season, about three weeks ago, and he let me know. We opened the position a couple of weeks ago.”

The part-time coaching position has been posted on edjoin.org, ziprecruiter.com and Facebook. It pays a $1,625 stipend and between $1,599 and $2,454 per unit taught, based on qualifications, for 11 units worth of classes.

Though it’s a part-time position, Marcopulos and other on-campus coaches vouch that it’s a full-time commitment. Ramsey, a former athletic trainer at the school, knows this.

“He got out of coaching for a reason,” Ramsey said. “It’s a lot. And not always fun.”

Ramsey said the school hopes to find a replacement as soon as possible.

The Seahawks’ top two scorers, forward Gabby Brooks (16.8 points per game) and guard Sydney Chesnut (13.7), both freshman out of Henderson, Nevada, couldn’t be reached for comment.

Cabrillo’s 12-player roster also featured two other freshmen from Nevada, forward Gabriella Dela Cruz and guard Faith Esquer, as well as redshirt freshman guard Rylan Davis, who hails from Warm Springs, Oregon.

It’s unclear if any of the out-of-state talents will remain at the school for coaching change.

“I hope we get someone good, so they decide to stick around,” Ramsey said. “That’s the goal.”
