Lake Mary has one of the best arms in the country in Notre Dame quarterback commit Noah Grubbs, and the Rams went down to South Florida on Friday to show it off … or perhaps so thought Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons.

Instead, Lake Mary coach Scott Perry decided to run the football and it worked to a charm. The Rams scored six rushing touchdowns and Grubbs tallied one touchdown pass as the Lake Mary dismantled Gibbons 49-20.

“We just ran the football. Those guys couldn’t stop the run,” Perry said.

Meanwhile, back in Central Florida, several games were rained out Friday night as a storm passed through right at game time across the region. East Orlando was not affected as much and Bishop Moore and Oviedo were able to punch it out in a wild thriller that saw the Hornets escape at Oviedo with a 45-40 victory.

Lake Mary’s Isaiah Thomas, Gavin Isaacs and Jaysen Soto each had two rushing touchdowns as the Rams ran wild against the Chiefs.

“We just went in there and thought we could run the football. … and we just kept pounding them,” Perry said. “We didn’t have to throw the ball very much and we were happy with it.”

Bishop Moore quarterback Bjorn Jurgensen showed why he’s headed to Virginia and the ACC as he took charge after the Hornets fell behind Oviedo 40-31 with 3:46 left in the game. From there, Jurgensen engineered two scoring drives, hitting Kenyon Alston with a 20-yard TD pass with 2:25 left.

After the Hornets defense held Oviedo, it was Jurgensen again leading Bishop Moore down the field and he scored on a 6-yard run with 40 seconds left in the game.

“We went down nine with like 3 1/2 minutes left, and every play was a pass play from there,” Bishop Moore coach Matt Hedrick said. “He made a lot of good plays, a lot of plays out of the pocket scrambling, made some good throws.

“We needed to go 1-0. We haven’t been 1-0 in a long time. I think it does a lot for our momentum and confidence moving forward.”

Numerous games were washed out and rescheduled, while Seminole didn’t even get a chance to wait out the rain. The ‘Noles were supposed to host Tampa Robinson but the team called late Friday afternoon and said it would not be coming due to transportation issues.

Apparently, there was no air conditioning on the bus that was supposed to transport the Robinson team. Seminole coach Karl Calhoun said he has tried to reschedule the game, but Robinson officials declined each date proposed, so Seminole is now trying to get the game registered as a forfeit in its favor.

Osceola waited out a two-hour weather delay before finally taking the field at 9:30 Friday night and eventually knocked off Treasure Coast 21-7.

In Volusia County, DeLand lost to state finalist Madison County 42-28 while Orange City University pulled of a huge victory over Daytona Beach Mainland 31-28

Malachi Walters connected with Jermane Hayes with 46 seconds on the clock to give the Titans a stunning 31-28 comeback win against the Buccaneers at Daytona Stadium. Mainland was a state champion last season. Hayes also had a 95-yard Pick-6 touchdown earlier in the game.

In rescheduled Saturday games, Lyman shut out Lake Brantley 27-0 and Boone fell to Mars High of Pennsylvania 47-35.

Boone could not stop the Mars passing game as the Planets lit it up for 401 yards passing, with three touchdown passes from Luke Goodworth of more than 80 yards each.

Boone quarterback Sam Johnson connected on touchdown passes to Zack Palmer, Isaiah Mizell and Arturo Quintana.

Lyman quarterback Breylon Sanchez had four touchdown passes, two to Sev Crooms. Ronald Mike had four catches and a TD and went over 100 yards receiving.

Apopka rescheduled its meeting with Ocoee for 6 p.m., Saturday night. Dr. Phillips will host Lake Nona at 6 p.m. Monday. Edgewater at Wekiva has been rescheduled for Sept. 3. There has been no reschedule dates set for West Orange at Evans, or Winter Park at Jones.
