Harbor High volleyball talent Sabine Kemos announced on social media Sunday that she will continue her athletic career at NCAA Division III Claremont-Mudd-Scripps while studying at Claremont McKenna College.

The 5-foot-11, senior middle blocker/outside hitter was named an all-Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League first-team player each of the past two seasons. She was also a first-team beach selection last spring.

Kemos helped the Pirates win SCCAL and Central Coast Section Division IV titles in 2023. The Pirates repeated as league champion in the fall and reached the D-IV section final for a second straight season.

She competes for Vision Volleyball Club’s Vision 18 Blue squad.

The Athenas, under the guidance of longtime and successful coach Kurt Vlasich, went 22-7 overall in the fall, including 14-2 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to take first place, and reached the second round of the NCAA D-III Tournament.Kemos is the third player from this year’s Pirates team to make a college commitment. Senior outside hitter Isla Johnson will play for University of Utah’s beach program, and Maren O’Farrell, a libero and defensive specialist, will play indoor for Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo.

Boys basketball

NorCal playoffs >> Santa Cruz (18-11), the newly crowned CCS D-III champion, and D-III runner-up Aptos (24-5) were seeded for the CIF NorCal Regional playoffs on Sunday.

Santa Cruz was placed in D-IV and given the No. 3 seed. The Cardinals host No. 14 Venture Academy (22-8) of Stockton in the first round on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Mustangs won the Central California Athletic League and reached the semifinals in the Sac-Joaquin Section’s D-IV playoffs.

If the Cardinals win their opener, they’ll host either No. 6 St. Patrick-St. Vincent (15-13) of Vallejo or No. 11 Burbank (23-9) of Sacramento in Thursday’s second round at 7 p.m.

Priory (21-6) of Portola Valley is the No. 1 seed, Westmont (19-8) of Campbell is No. 2, and Palma (20-7) of Salinas is No. 4.

Aptos was placed in D-III and given the No. 9 seed. The SCCAL champion Mariners travel to San Anselmo to play No. 8 San Domenico (23-8). The Panthers took second behind San Francisco’s University in the Bay Counties Athletic League’s West Division and second in the North Coast Section’s D-III playoffs.

If the Mariners win their opener, they’ll either host No. 16 Pleasant Valley (17-11) of Chico or play at No. 1 The King’s Academy (23-4) in Sunnyvale in Thursday’s second round at 7 p.m.

Christian Brothers (25-7) of Sacramento is the No. 2 seed, Christopher (25-2) of Gilroy is No. 3, and University (25-2) is No. 4.

Girls soccer

NorCal playoffs >> Soquel (13-4-4), the SCCAL runner-up and newly crowned CCS Division IV champion, was seeded No. 2 in the CIF D-IV NorCal Regional playoffs.

The Knights host No. 7 San Rafael (15-9-0) in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

The Bulldogs took seventh place in the Marin County Athletic League and second in the North Coast Section D-IV playoffs as the No. 6 seed.

If the Knights win their opener, they’ll host either No. 3 Sacred Heart Prep (11-7-3) of Atherton or No. 6 Sonoma Valley (10-8-5) in the semifinals on Thursday at 5 p.m.

On the other side of the bracket, No. 8 Liberty Ranch (15-7-2) of Galt plays at No. 1 Fresno Christian (17-2-0), and No. 5 Winters (22-1-0) plays at No. 4 Petaluma (13-7-3).

The regional championship is slated for Saturday at 5 p.m.. The highest remaining seed will host.

West Coast Board Riders >> Santa Cruz Boardriders took first place with 256.61 points at the WCBR’s North Region Stop No. 3 at The Hook on Sunday.

Central Coast Boardriders (183.88) took second and was followed by Santa Barbara Boardriders (177.95), Ventura Boardriders (141.88) and Red Triangle Boardriders (136.95) in the standings.

Nat Young, 33, was named MVP for Santa Cruz Boardriders after scoring a perfect 10, which was doubled to a 20, while competing in the 30-39 heat.

Men’s soccer

All-conference >> Cabrillo College’s Yoan Ponio, a freshman out of Saint Etienne, France, was voted Forward of the Year in the Coast Conference North Division. He finished with 16 goals, including five game winners, and two assists in 20 games.

Jack Dawson, a sophomore defender out of Soquel High, and Francesco Ricciardi, a freshman midfielder out of Vasto, Italy, were first-team selections for the Seahawks.

Cabrillo’s Kelian Freeman, a freshman defender out of Avignon, France, and Luca Venturoli, a freshman forward out of Bologna, Italy, were named to the second team.

Eduardo Alvarez, a freshman midfielder out of Aptos, and Mathis Gaultier,a freshman midfielder out of Saint Louis, Lyon, France, were honorable mention selections for the Seahawks (7-9-4, 4-6-2), who finished fifth in the conference standings and qualified for the CCCAA NorCal Regional playoffs.

Women’s soccer

All-conference >> Cabrillo had four players receive all-conference honors after the Seahawks (5-13-1, 2-6-1) took fifth place in the Coast Conference North Division.

Alessandra Zuniga, a freshman goalie out of Aptos, and Sadie Strout, a freshman midfielder/forward out of Soquel, were named to the all-North Division first team.

Leila Nite, a freshman defender out of San Lorenzo Valley, and Savannah Cresswell, a sophomore midfielder out of Pleasant Valley High in Chico, were named to the second team.

College commitments >> Cabrillo’s Olivia Iturria, a sophomore goalie out of Soquel, and teammate Savannah Cresswell, a sophomore midfielder out of Pleasant Valley High in Chico, committed to CSU Stanislaus in Turlock.

Boys volleyball

Stockton Classic >> Harbor went 4-0 at the sixth annual Stockton Classic over the weekend and was crowned site champion.

The Pirates earned wins over Edison (25-19, 25-19), Clayton Valley Charter, Dublin (20-25, 25-23, 15-9), and Lathrop (22-25, 25-23, 15-12).

Harbor (6-0) hosts Mount Madonna on Tuesday and Monterey on Thursday. Both matches start at 7 p.m.

Men’s track and field

Kim Duyst Invite >> Chico State sophomore Brody Staley, a Soquel alum, took first in the 400 (48.57) at the two-day Kim Duyst Invite, which ended Saturday in Turlock. He also helped the Wildcats take first in the 4×400 relay (3:17.66) and third in the 4×100 relay (41.36).

Women’s track and field

Kim Duyst Invite >> UC Santa Cruz freshman Lucia Muthu took second in the 1,500 (4:45.97) at the two-day Kim Duyst Invite, which ended Saturday in Turlock.

Monterey Peninsula freshman Ariel Ferrell, a Santa Cruz alumna, posted the highest mark in the pole vault and tied for second (10-11.75).

CSU Monterey Bay freshman Rachel Hoops, an Aptos alumna, took third in the 800 (2:21.58) and helped the Otters’ 4×400 relay team take third (4:13.67).
