PRUNEDALE >> The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad responded to a report of a suspicious item that was left leaning against a California Highway Patrol vehicle in Prunedale Monday. There was ultimately no threat found.
At 7:45 a.m., CHP officers at a local business on Vierra Canyon Road were alerted by patrons that there was a bag sitting next to their patrol vehicle, according to a news release.
The officers found what appeared to be a large black computer bag next to the vehicle. Surveillance footage was reviewed and showed a subject walking up to the vehicle and setting the bag down.
At approximately 8:15 a.m., CHP requested assistance from the bomb squad to identify the contents of the bag.
Shortly after, a subject who matched the description of the suspect in the surveillance footage was detained in a nearby shopping center on San Miguel Canyon Road by Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies.
A perimeter was established and closed Vierra Canyon Road between Highway 101 and the Prune Tree Shopping Center to ensure public safety, said the news release. People in the immediate area were notified of the item and the subsequent investigation.
At 11:15 a.m., the bomb squad confirmed that the bag contained a DVD player and posed no threat. Roadways were reopened after it was determined there was no threat to the public.
Deputies released the suspect after they discovered he had found the DVD player in the bag and was attempting to turn it in as found property.
“The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public that any lost or misplaced items can be reported by calling local law enforcement or making face-to-face contact with officers or deputies directly,” said the news release. “We would also like to remind the public that if you see suspicious packages or circumstances, please call 9-1-1.”
