The Woodland High School varsity baseball team kept up the pressure on the top two teams in the Golden Empire League thanks to a comprehensive 10-0 win over league rivals El Camino Wednesday afternoon.

“The games we are supposed to win are sometimes tricky since guys get out of their routines,” Wolves manager Danny Eoff said. “Our bats did enough combined with the freebies El Camino gave us, allowing us to get runs on the board and end it early.”

The Wolves (12-6, 9-5 GEL) came into the matchup at Clark Field one game up on Destiny Charter Academy for third place in the league behind Rio Linda and an undefeated Sutter.

After failing to get the sweep this past Friday against fifth-placed Casa Roble, the Wolves began working on another potential sweep by defeating El Camino 18-2 in game one of the series on Monday.

David Tanner pitched four innings, allowing just 2 hits and striking out 2 before sophomore PJ Pinegar came in to close the final inning by striking out a batter. At the plate, freshman Riley Salvemini led the way for the Wolves with a towering home run, to go with his 2 other hits and 2 other runs scored. Pinegar had a game-high 4 RBI, to go with 2 hits and 3 runs. Tanner helped out his own cause with 3 RBI, 2 hits, and 2 runs scored.

Brayden Sandoval and Alex Van Dam had also had 2 RBI each.

The Wolves got off to a fast start, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. The first run came from a Cohen Dwyer RBI single that scored Dylan Ramirez. They then made it 2-0 after Ramirez scored on a fake double steal attempt that then turned into a real one.

After another scoreless inning on the mound from freshman Riley Salvemini, the Wolves would add four runs in the bottom of the second. Pinegar kicked off the scoring by getting drilled in the back with the bases loaded, bringing home pinch runner Aiden Lopez to make it 3-0.

A David Tanner sacrifice would score Dwyer and make it 4-0 before Joseph Cadotte came up to smack a 2 RBI single, scoring both Salvemini and Pinegar to make it 6-0.

In the bottom of the third, a sacrifice fly from Trevor Zane scored senior Joseph Quezada, who led the inning off with a walk to make it 7-0. Salvemini then continued to aid his own cause with a triple that scored Zane and made it 8-0. A Pinegar double then scored Salvemini and made it 9-0.

After a scoreless bottom of the fourth, the Wolves walked it off in the bottom of the fifth inning via the 10-run mercy rule, thanks to a throwing out on a Braydon Sandoval ground out that allowed Nat Gutierrez to score from third and make it 10-0.

Salvemini finished the game with a five-inning shortened no-hitter, striking out 8, with a hit by pitch as his only blemish on the night.

“It’s awesome to see his skills,” Eoff said. “He has the skills, confidence, and composure to be successful. He knows there will be ups and downs as teams begin to target him later in the season, but he’s always putting himself in the best position to be successful.”

Up next for the Wolves will be the third and final game of the series against El Camino, where the Wolves will aim for their first league sweep won on the field and not via forfeit.

They will travel to El Camino High School on Friday, with a first pitch set for 4:15 p.m. The following week, they will be tested in a tournament against Center and Del Campo before finding out who else they will face.

“We are right there in terms of getting a sweep,” Eoff said. “The message after the game is to get a good day of work and then go out there and punch first. We want to peak before this tournament this next week and then the final two weeks of the league.”
