UCSC annual print sale
The Elena Baskin Visual Arts Center on Baskin Service Road at UC Santa Cruz will host its annual print sale featuring hundreds of original prints in a variety of media at this two-day event from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 6-7. There will be woodcuts, lithographs, etchings, photo-based prints, screen prints and more. All proceeds benefit UCSC Art Department students, with 80% of proceeds going to the individual artists and 20% to support the Print Studio (and thereby back to printmaking students).
This once-a-year event presents an extraordinary opportunity for students to display and sell their work to the public. The event also offers an opportunity to see the exceptional quality of the printmaking program and facilities at UC Santa Cruz. Information can be found at arts.ucsc.edu.

Cabrillo Symphonic Winds Spring Concert

From May 23 to 26, St. John’s Helpful Shop at 246-A Center Ave. will have a half off all clothes and shoes. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 4 Sunday. Proceeds will benefit Santa Cruz nonprofits. Call 831-708-4238.

Mid County Senior Center benefit dance
The Mid County Senior Center will host a benefit dance and concert featuring the Ten O’Clock Lunch Band from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at 829 Bay Ave.
Cost of admission is $10. Bob Folker will teach a Basics of East Coast Swing Class at 6:15 p.m. free with paid admission to the dance. Mid County Senior Center provides a variety of programs and activities for the local community. Ages 18 and over are welcome to participate in the dances.

Chamber music festival concerts
Local nonprofit Music in May announces its 18th annual chamber music festival on Memorial Day weekend. There will be an organ and harpist recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Peace United Church, 900 High St. in Santa Cruz. MainStage concerts are at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Cabrillo’s Samper Recital Hall at 6500 Soquel Drive, Aptos. History displays at the library
Get to know the past at the Aptos Library, 7695 Soquel Drive. The Community Room will have displays from the Aptos History Museum of the Polo Grounds of Rio Del Mar, including Claus Spreckels’ thoroughbred racetrack. This display will be replaced in May with photos from the 1920 silent movie “The-One-Way-Trail,” filmed in Aptos and at the Loma Prieta Lumber Mill. This new exhibit will coincide with the presentation “When Hollywood Came to Aptos,” in the community room at 3 p.m. Saturday.
There are several displays at the end of the library’s main hall, including about the Native people who lived here before the coming of the Spanish, about trout fishing in the 1930s, of Spanish saddles featuring a side saddle belonging to Martina Castro and of Chinese glass and pottery from the Chinese bunkhouse in Aptos Village from about 1900. Love’s Gardens to host Food Forest Workshop
Love’s Gardens offers a free Food Forest Workshop from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday to teach homeowners and those with community gardens how to reap a wealth of delicious fresh edibles, even from a relatively small piece of land. Golden Love of Love’s Gardens will lead the workshop. Love is a trained horticulturist, permaculture designer, former community college instructor and certified rainwater and greywater specialist.
Learn about appropriate plant varieties and techniques for sustainably growing fruiting trees and edible understory plants. Tour the nascent food forest. Join in the springtime magic of planting avocado trees, evergreen cherry tree, citrus and fig trees to expand the existing forest of almost 30 fruit trees. Learn about gopher protection, proper planting depth, proper plant nutrition and irrigation using graywater and rainwater. Bike Santa Cruz County community bike ride
Join Bike Santa Cruz County, District 4 Supervisor Felipe Hernandez and Watsonville Mayor Maria Orozco on a family-friendly bicycle ride around Watsonville at 10 a.m. Sunday, with routes designed to cater to all levels of cyclists, including beginners. Meeting location will be at the East Lake Village Shopping Center, 936 E. Lake Ave. Participating will be Community Bike Collective, Watsonville Cyclery, SC Community Traffic Safety Commision, Cabrillo Bike Co-op and more.
Whether you’re a seasoned rider or new to biking, the Watsonville Community Bike Rides offer something for everyone, bringing together cyclists of all ages and abilities for fun and exercise. Riders will explore local parks, scenic trails and other hidden gems throughout the city, all while learning about the benefits of cycling and safe riding practices.
