Eventually making a run at an NCAA Tournament berth all but required the Colorado women’s soccer team to take advantage of a season-opening six-game homestand.

The Buffaloes did just that.

Colorado put a final winning touch on that homestand on Sunday by topping Purdue 3-0 at Prentup Field. The win capped a 5-1 run through the first three weeks of the season, with the only setback occurring in the season’s second game in a 1-0 decision against Marquette.

CU outshot the Boilermakers 10-6 and held Purdue to just three shots on goal.

“I thought it was a very good performance,” CU head coach Danny Sanchez said in a release. “Sometimes when you come off an emotional win like we did Thursday against NC State there’s a letdown, but I didn’t see one today. I thought we controlled the tempo throughout the game and scored some really good goals, all three goals were really good. We defended really well as a team collectively and really limited Purdue’s opportunities. It’s a great win for the Buffs.”

After recording the first two-assist game of her career in Thursday’s win against North Carolina State, fifth-year midfielder Amaya Gonzalez posted her first career game with a goal and an assist. Gonzalez opened the scoring against Purdue with her first goal of the season — and her first since 2021 — in the 24th minute. Sunday’s performance gave Gonzalez five points in two games after entering the weekend with six points in 67 career games.

The Buffs struck again six minutes later, with Gonzalez assisting on the second goal of the season by freshman Faith Leyba. Like Gonzalez’s two corner-kick strikes converted by Shyra James against North Carolina State, Leyba headed home a corner kick offering from Gonzalez. The other Leyba twin, Hope, capped the scoring late in the second half off the first career assist for Boulder native Ava Priest.

The Leyba twins collected points in the same game against Colorado College on Aug. 24, but on Sunday they became the first sisters in CU program history to score goals in the same game.

Goalie Jordan Nytes needed to make just three saves to record her fourth shutout in her first six games at CU. Nytes stopped 21 of 23 shots during the six-game homestand.

CU plays its first road game of the season on Thursday at New Mexico. The Lobos were picked third in the Mountain West Conference preseason coaches’ poll, but only three points separated them from the top spot.“We talked a lot about finding a third goal. Purdue is a very good team that is coached very well and if they get it 2-1, then now we’re panicking and it becomes more than it needs to be,” Sanchez said. “I thought getting that third goal really killed the match off which was key to us being able to settle down.”
