CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Kasparas Jakucionis scored 24 points, Tomislav Ivisic scored 16 points and Illinois held off UCLA for an 83-78 win on Tuesday night to end the Bruins’ seven-game win streak.
UCLA (18-7, 9-5 Big Ten) trailed by 16 points with 4:51 to play, but cut the deficit to two points when Skyy Clark hit a 3-pointer with 28 seconds remaining. That was as close as the Bruins would get as the Fighting Illini made their free throws down the stretch.
Kylan Boswell scored 11 points and reserve Will Riley 10 for Illinois (17-8, 9-6), which finished shooting 51% (27 of 53).
Tyler Bilodeau scored 25 points for UCLA on 9-of-17 shooting from the field and 7 of 12 from behind the arc. The junior’s seven 3s marked a career-best. Bilodeau also finished with 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals.
Kobe Johnson scored 14 points for the Bruins, and reserve Sebastian Mack 11 points.
Ben Humrichous made 1 of 2 foul shots to give Illinois an 81-78 lead with 7 seconds left. He missed the second shot, and off the carom, Ivisic deflected the miss, which ended up in the hands of Boswell. Forced to foul, UCLA sent Boswell to the line, where he made a pair of free throws to secure the win.
Jakucionis made an improbable leaping leaner just inside the 3-point arc for a 78-73 Illinois advantage with 38 seconds left.
Humrichous made a 3 with 4:51 remaining for a 76-60 Illinois lead. The Bruins then went on a 13-0 run to get back within range.
Despite shooting 32% from the field in the opening half, UCLA went on a 10-0 run to close the gap from 15 points, 28-13, to five points, 28-23 with 1:42 remaining in the first half
The Bruins still lead the series 6-5.
