ATHERTON — School officials have identified the victim of an Atherton collision as Menlo-Atherton High School football coach Dylan Taylor.
The crash happened around 7:40 a.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Middlefield Road and Prior Lane, the Atherton Police Department said in a Thursday news release.
The bicyclist was taken to an area hospital and pronounced dead a short time later.
Menlo-Atherton High School Principal Karl Losekoot identified the bicyclist as Dylan Taylor, a freshman football coach at the campus, according to the news site InMenlo.
“His tragic loss will be felt by many,” he said in a message to the community and staff.
Taylor grew up in Menlo Park and went to North Idaho College college in 2015, according to his Facebook Page. He was currently working at La Entrada school as a Special Education Paraeducator.
The death marks the city’s first traffic fatality of the year.
An initial investigation determined the garbage truck was traveling southbound on Middlefield Road and beginning to turn right onto Prior Lane when it hit the bicyclist, who was also traveling southbound in the designated bicycle lane, police said.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Police said there is no indication that alcohol or drugs were contributing factors in the collision.
In a statement Friday, Atherton police Chief Steven McCulley said officers will be stepping up patrols in the area to bring more attention to bicycle, pedestrian and vehicle safety.
“On behalf of the entire police department team and the town of Atherton, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the victim,” McCulley said. “No words can ease the pain of such a devastating loss, but please know that our thoughts are with you during this incredibly difficult time.”
