MARINA >> The transformation of Imjin Parkway continues to take shape in Marina as work on the Widening and Roundabout Project progresses with night work tentatively scheduled next week for drainage and other water work along two points in the project.

Night work is planned for the installation of storm drain and water facilities crossing at the Army Reserve and at Abrams Drive, according the city of Marina and the Transportation Agency for Monterey County. This work is tentatively scheduled for the week of Nov. 4 for three to four nights. Hours of work will be 8 p.m.-6 a.m. and will involve saw-cutting pavement, excavation equipment and trucks. The contractor will need to have lighting for the operations but will make every effort to aim lighting away from residences.

The Imjin Parkway Widening and Roundabout Project is a two-year effort to widen and increase safety on an artery linking the Monterey Peninsula and Salinas Valley for about 30,000 daily motorists through the city of Marina.

The city of Marina is the lead agency for the project, which is also the second regional Transportation Agency for Monterey County Measure X project to be built.

Night work is also anticipated around Nov. 11 for the transition roadway west of Preston Drive. This transition will move traffic from the new roadway west of Preston Drive back over to the existing traffic lanes on the south side of the concrete barriers. A specific date has not yet been determined. More specific information will be provided when dates and times are scheduled.

The enforceable speed limit through the construction zone is 25 mph. Preston Drive will be closed at Imjin Parkway until early November.

The project will affect 1.7 miles of Imjin Parkway from Reservation Road to Imjin Road and will include the construction of four roundabouts and increase the stretch of roadway to four lanes.

Day work on the project through Nov. 8 will include the continued installation of streetlight and fiber optic conduit, and irrigation service lines between Marina Heights Drive and Imjin Road, the installation of street lights between Reservation Road and Preston Drive, the continued phase 1 drainage facilities for Bio swale improvements, the continued grading and installation of base material for the temporary pavement at Imjin Road, the start of installing a storm drain at Abrams Drive, beginning to form curb and gutter, and sidewalk at Marina Heights Drive and Imjin Road, and the continued environmental monitoring of contractor activities job wide.

The Imjin Parkway Widening and Roundabout Project’s $40.5 million in funding sources include $2 million from Marina generated from development impact fees, $18.25 million from Transportation Agency for Monterey County’s Measure X and $20.25 million from California’s SB1 local partnership program.

Measure X was the November 2016 ballot measure approved by 67.7% of Monterey County voters for the Transportation Agency’s Transportation Safety and Investment Plan.

Construction began Feb. 12 and is anticipated to complete by the end of June 2026.
