


Fossil Ridge’s Myers named Gatorade Colorado girls player of the year
After leading the SaberCats to their first Class 5A state title last month, Fossil Ridge senior defender Teagan Myers was named the Gatorade Colorado Girls Soccer Player of the Year this week.
The 5-foot-7 Kentucky commit led a defense that allowed just 13 goals en route to a 15-1-4 record and 5A state championship victory over Castle View. She scored the loan goal in the title game and finished with four goals and two assists on a season that also ended with 5A player of the year honors.
She carried a 4.18 weighted GPA in the classroom and volunteered for multiple initiatives as part of Fossil Ridge’s National Honor Society and Key Club.
Jonathan Toews is making his return with Winnipeg
WINNIPEG, Manitoba >> Jonathan Toews is going home to sign with the Winnipeg Jets as he attempts to make an NHL comeback after a two-year absence.
The team announced Friday that the Winnipeg native has agreed to terms on a contract. It is expected to be a one-year deal, though the contract cannot be registered until July 1.
Padres’ Suarez suspended 3 games, fined for hitting Ohtani with pitch
LOS ANGELES >> San Diego Padres closer Robert Suarez was suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount Friday for intentionally hitting the Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani with a pitch on Thursday night.
Suarez will appeal the suspension, keeping him eligible to play on Friday night.
Padres manager Mike Shildt and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts also received one-game suspensions and undisclosed fines for their roles in the brouhaha that occurred in both halves of the ninth inning.
Angels’ Washington out indefinitely because
ANAHEIM, Calif. >> Angels manager Ron Washington will be out indefinitely because of health issues, and bench coach Ray Montgomery will manage Friday night’s series opener against the Houston Astros.
Washington, 73, experienced shortness of breath and appeared fatigued toward the end of a four-game series against the Yankees. He was cleared by Yankees doctors to fly home with the team Thursday night and underwent a series of medical tests on Friday.
Pirates’ Santana suspended 4 games for confrontation with a fan
NEW YORK >> Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Dennis Santana was suspended four games and fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball on Friday, a day after he was involved in an altercation with a fan.
Santana is appealing the decision by the league and can continue to play while the situation is being reviewed.
Wisconsin, NIL collective sue Miami, allege tampering
The University of Wisconsin and its NIL collective VC Connect filed a joint lawsuit on Friday against the University of Miami alleging it knowingly induced one of the Badgers’ football players to abandon a lucrative name, image and likeness contract to play for the Florida school this upcoming season.
The player in question in the filing is referred to only as “Student-Athlete A.” But the case summary describes facts that line up with the situation involving cornerback Xavier Lucas, who last December announced his plans to enter the transfer portal.
