Authorities on Wednesday identified the 58-year-old driver killed in a three-car crash in an unincorporated area near Covina earlier this week.

The collision also left two people injured.

The driver, Darrell Ellis, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was ejected prior to his Audi A4 catching fire, said Officer Joseph Davila, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened on Arrow Highway, east of Barranca Avenue, at about 9:20 p.m. Monday when the Audi was heading west on Arrow Highway, went out of control and then drove in reverse into the eastbound lanes, Davila said.

The Audi collided with a Hyundai Accent and a Mazda3, CHP Sgt. David Kessel said.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 39-year-old Pomona woman, was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center with major injuries, Kessel said.

The 32-year-old El Monte woman driving the Mazda complained of pain but was not hospitalized, he added. Her passenger, a 14-year-old El Monte girl, was not injured, Kessel said.

A this time, the CHP doesn’t suspect alcohol or drugs as factors in the crash.
