The Detroit Lions’ quest for the No. 1 seed and another NFC North title hit a bump in the road with last week’s loss to the Buffalo Bills.
The silver lining is that Detroit still controls its fate heading into the season’s last three games. Still, with the Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles both red-hot, the Lions could use a little bit of help — especially after another run of injuries saw them lose a pair of defensive starters (defensive tackle Alim McNeill, knee; cornerback Carlton Davis III, jaw) for the season.
Entering the weekend, the Lions — which hold the tiebreaker over the Eagles and Vikings — have a 78% chance to win the NFC North and a 44% chance to win the No. 1 seed, according to the New York Times playoff simulator.
The Green Bay Packers are still technically alive in the NFC North, although something just shy of a miracle would need to play out over the next three games for them to take the crown. The Packers would need to win their last three games while the Lions and Vikings would have to lose their next two games before playing to a tie in the season finale.
That said, we’ll focus this week’s rooting guide on the two teams (Minnesota and Philadelphia) with records equal to the Lions’ since the Packers are such a long shot. The simulator gives Green Bay less than a 1% chance of winning the North.

Detroit Lions (12-2) at Chicago Bears (4-10)
Kickoff: 1:00 p.m. Sunday, Soldier Field, Chicago (FOX)
Rooting interest: Lions
With a Lions win: Lions’ odds to earn No. 1 seed increase to 54%; Lions’ odds to win NFC North increase to 83%
With a Bears win: Lions’ odds to earn No. 1 seed decrease to 17%; Lions’ odds to win NFC North decrease to 60%
The Bears are on an eight-game losing streak while the Lions are out for revenge after having an 11-game winniner.
Philadelphia Eagles (12-2) at Washington Commanders (9-5)
Kickoff: 1:00 p.m. Sunday, Northwest Stadium, Landover, Maryland
Rooting interest: Commanders
With an Eagles win: Lions’ odds to earn No. 1 seed decrease to 32%
With a Commanders win: Lions’ odds to earn No. 1 seed increase to 67%
The Eagles are on a 10-game winning streak entering the weekend and are hot on the Lions’ tail for the No. 1 seed. Philadelphia enters the weekend with a 41% chance to earn a first-round bye.
The Commanders and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, meanwhile, have an 88% chance to make the playoffs and have a chance to clinch this weekend if a few other results go their way. They’ll be highly motivated to gain vengeance on the divisional rival after Washington dropped the first meeting at Philadelphia back in November. The Eagles beat Washington, 26-18, in Week 11.
Minnesota Vikings (12-2) at Seattle Seahawks (8-6)
Kickoff: 4:05 p.m. Sunday, Lumen Field, Seattle (FOX)
Rooting interest: Seahawks
With a Vikings win: Lions’ odds to earn No. 1 seed decrease to 44%; Lions’ odds to win NFC North decrease to 69%
With a Seahawks win: Lions’ odds to earn No. 1 seed increase to 48%; Lions’ odds to win NFC North increase to 89%
Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith expects to play against Minnesota this weekend, which is a huge boost to the Lions’ situation after it looked like the Vikings could be traveling to play a lame duck led by backup quarterback Sam Howell.
A Seahawks win this weekend would greatly enhance the Lions’ chances of winning the division, representing a 20-point swing in the odds. If the Lions can secure wins over Chicago and San Francisco, a loss for Minnesota in either of its next two games would mean the Lions can clinch the division before a Week 18 matchup between the two teams.
Ultimately, it seems as though the New York Times playoff simulator is far more concerned with the Eagles when it comes to the No. 1 seed. Based on the Vikings ‘ result, there’s only a 4% difference in Detroit’s odds for the No. 1 seed.
