For Domenic Zoccoli, in his first year as head coach of the Pasadena boys soccer team, it doesn’t get much sweeter than this.
The Bulldogs have a 10-0 record and have outscored their opponents 41-4.
Pasadena won the Cal High tournament Saturday by defeating host California 5-0 in the championship game.
The Bulldogs head into their Pacific League opener at Burbank on Tuesday having shut out their past five opponents and seven of the last eight.
“It’s been great,” Zoccoli said. “The boys are playing so well. As long as we avoid injuries and stay healthy, I feel like we can keep it going.”
Zoccoli had been the junior varsity coach at Pasadena since 2015 before he took over the varsity team after longtime coach Cherif Zein stepped aside. Zein had been with the program for more than three decades.
Pasadena isn’t new to success. The Bulldogs were 15-3-2 last season and won the Pacific League with a 12-0-2 record.
The Bulldogs were the top seed in the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs a year ago, but were knocked out in the first round by Knight 1-0.
“For these particular 15 boys, they’re special, they’re good kids and they work hard,” Zoccoli said. “I’ve had most of them during JV at one point, so it’s special to be here on varsity and watching them come together like this. We have a good team coaching them, they have a good trainer and they listen and work hard.
“We want to win league, that’s the goal. But we also want to win CIF because that’s something that has been tough. We always seem to go one or two rounds and that’s it. Hopefully that will change.”
In Pasadena’s 5-0 win over California senior David Vieyra, who leads the team with nine goals, scored twice.
Vieyra is the team’s center midfielder and leaves his footprints all over the game.
“He’s all over field,” Zoccoli said. “He doesn’t just score goals he controls the game for us.”
The Bulldogs also got a good showing during the tournament from Cole Ellis, a transfer from Marshall who recently became eligible with the end of the sit-out period.
The Bulldogs have several scoring weapons, including Fabian Reyes and Roberto Martinez-Cortez, who each have eight goals.
Senior Peter Min leads the team’s strong backline.
As long as the defense keeps up what it has been doing, Zoccoli expects the team to continue to have success.
“Like I said, we have a group of kids that have played together and play for each other,” Zoccoli said. “They’re fun to watch. I have enjoyed it.”
MUIR GIRLS OFF TO HISTORIC START
The Muir girls soccer team is enjoying a remarkable turnaround.
After going 6-13-2 last year, the Mustangs are 11-1-1 with all of their wins by shutout. They have allowed just three goals, and their only loss was 1-0 to Birmingham.
Most of their starters are freshmen and sophomores.
Muir defeated Magnolia 2-0 to win the White Division in the Best in the West Winter Classic tournament hosted by Newport Harbor.
It’s quite an improvement for a team that prior to last season had gone winless in the Pacific League over 156 straight matches, a streak that went back to 2005.
This is coach Ramon Melin’s third season in charge. Muir won just two Pacific League games last season, but Melin was still recognized as the league’s coach of the year.
