The Marion County, Indiana, coroner’s office on Thursday identified the couple as 70-year-old Iristeen Hunt and 73-year-old Charles Hunt.
Both of their deaths have been ruled accidents caused by multiple blunt force trauma injuries, the chief deputy coroner said.
Indianapolis police said Iristeen Hunt was driving a black 2013 Lincoln MKX on the third floor of the City Market parking garage just before 10 a.m. Wednesday when the SUV struck the left rear corner of a parked vehicle and traveled approximately 20 feet into and through the parking garage wall before plunging three stories and landing on its roof in an alley below.
Both Iristeen and Charles Hunt, who was a passenger in the vehicle, were pronounced dead at the scene, Indianapolis Fire Department Battalion Chief Rita Reith said. A man who witnessed the crash was taken to an area hospital for shock-like symptoms, she said.
A large slab of the concrete garage wall came down with the vehicle, leaving the remaining third-floor barrier unstable, Reith said. As a result, the garage was closed to the public and code enforcement officials were called to the scene.
Police are continuing to investigate the crash, but at this point it’s unclear what might have caused it, Reith said.
