San Dimas’ boys basketball team looked like it was about to run Los Altos off its home court in the first quarter Wednesday, racing to a 19-2 lead with a 15-0 run as the Saints hit shot after shot.
But Los Altos eventually reeled San Dimas back in and wound up pulling away late for an 82-70 come-from-behind victory to remain undefeated in the Hacienda League.
Los Altos improved to 16-4 and 3-0 while handing the Saints (13-8, 1-1) their first league loss.
Los Altos’ Kevin Keshishyan scored a game-high 22 points and Kareem Mendez had 19 points, but it was Isaiah Meza’s four 3-pointers and 12 second-half points that helped the Conquerors pull ahead and pull away.
“They came out very tough in the beginning,” Los Altos coach Jeff Lucas said. “I was thinking this has got to be one of mine or one of our program’s biggest comebacks getting down 17 points. It wasn’t looking very good, but it tells a lot about our squad. We’re kind of young too, but we got guys with experience, especially with Isaiah Meza, he helped with that big run for us.”
Nathan Yearout helped the Saints build their big lead, scoring 15 of his team-high 19 points in the first half. Jeremiah Garzon and Luke Chavez finished with 15 points apiece.
After falling behind 17 points, the Conquerors cut the Saints’ lead to 12 points at the end of the quarter and were down only four points at halftime.
After falling behind 49-43 early in the third quarter, the Conquerors answered with a 20-3 run to take a 61-52 leading, ending the run with back-to-back 3-pointers from Meza.
After the Saints closed the Conquerors’ lead to 63-60 in the fourth quarter, Meza answered with a 3-pointer to push them back up six points, and hit another 3-pointer for a 74-65 lead with 2:09 left.
“He’s a very good shooter,” Lucas said of Meza. “He’s a senior who had a good sophomore year but had injuries last year. He’s a spark for us like he was today. But I’m so proud of these guys after being down big like that.”
