A 20-year-old Detroit man has been charged in connection with a handgun that Shelby Township police say was found hidden behind a loose panel in his vehicle.

Rolando Hunt Jr. was arraigned last month in 41A District Court on one count of carrying a concealed weapon, a five-year felony. Magistrate James Verploeg released him on a $5,000 personal bond.

According to police, officers pulled Hunt over on a traffic stop in the area of Van Dyke Avenue and 21 Mile Road at 2 a.m. June 24.

When he was asked, Hunt gave consent for officers to search his vehicle. During the search, the officer noticed several loose panels throughout the vehicle that were not consistent with this type of car, police said in a news release.

The officer eventually discovered a .40-caliber semi-automatic Glock pistol concealed in a hidden compartment below the vehicle’s radio, according to the release. Officers also found a fully loaded magazine under a seat in the vehicle.

Hunt does not have a CPL and the gun was not registered to him, according to police. He was arrested and held at the Shelby Township Police Department pending his arraignment.

“This is exactly the type of police work that helps keep the streets of Shelby Township safer from criminals like this,” Chief Robert Shelide said in the release. “Great instincts, great training, and great follow-through.”
