Michael Che may be saying goodbye to “Saturday Night Live” at the end of Season 50.

The “Weekend Update” co-anchor, who joined the cast during Season 40, announced his exit from the series in February while performing stand-up at the University of Rochester. “This is my last season. I’m not coming back, don’t worry. I’m done, it’s over for me. It’s been so much fun. It’s a little emotional, it’s bittersweet,” Che told the audience per the Campus Times.

He didn’t touch on why he was leaving and what was up next for him.

However, this isn’t the first time that the “That Damn Michael Che” star has said he was leaving “SNL.” Che has frequently teased his exit on social media and has made similar statements during other standup sets over the years. “This is my last year,” he told a Minneapolis audience in 2022 regarding his time on the show, per Variety.

After making headlines for this statement, he brushed it off on his Instagram story, writing: “To comedy fans; please stop telling reporters everything you hear at a comedy show. You’re spoiling the trick.”

However, that same year, the native New Yorker told The New York Times that he’s been thinking about leaving the late-night sketch comedy series for some time.

“My head has been at leaving for the past five seasons,” he said. “I do think that I’ve been here longer than I’ll be here. This show is built for younger voices and, at some point, there’ll be something more exciting to watch at the halfway mark of the show than me and dumb [Colin] Jost.”

Che has co-anchored “Weekend Update” since 2014, when he first joined the show. His co-anchor, Jost, has been working on “SNL” since 2005, when he was hired as a writer.

When Jost first made it to the “Weekend Update” desk in 2014, he initially worked alongside former castmate Cecily Strong. Che took her place shortly after, and his relationship with Jost became a favorite amongst fans.

The men’s annual joke swap, in which they write jokes for each other that the other doesn’t get to see until they’re reading them on air, has also become a popular segment that viewers look forward to each year.
