



Cabrillo College’s baseball team qualified for the California Community College Athletic Association NorCal Regional playoffs, it was announced Sunday at the seeding meeting.
The No. 21 seed Seahawks (18-21 overall) will open the playoffs against No. 4 Feather River (31-9) in Quincy.
Game 1 in their best-of-three series begins Friday at 2 p.m., and Game 2 starts Saturday at 2 p.m. If a third game is necessary, the teams will play again 30 minutes after Game 2 ends.
The winner advances to the Super Regionals on May 8-10. The winner of the No. 9 Ohlone (31-9)/No. 16 Sacramento City (21-19), and No. 5 Sierra (26-13)/No. 19/20 Cañada (20-19) regional series also advance to the Super Regional.
Santa Rosa (38-1) earned the No. 1 seed and hosts No. 24 American River (16-24) in the regionals.
Coast Conference South Division champion West Valley (31-9), a team the Seahawks beat three times in four meetings, earned the No. 2 seed and hosts No. 23 Diablo Valley (16-23).No. 3 Fresno City (31-7) hosts No. 22 Monterey Peninsula (20-19).
Cabrillo, 8-2 in its past 10 games, is hoping to recreate its postseason magic from a year ago, when it reached the Super Regional final as the No. 23 seed.
College softball
NorCal playoffs >> Coast Conference champion West Valley, which features Watsonville alumna Rylee Gomez and San Lorenzo Valley alumna Amelia Sizemore, earned the No. 1 seed for the NorCal Regional playoffs.
Gomez, a sophomore infielder, is one of the conference’s top hitters. She’s batting .471 (40 for 85) with 17 extra-base hits, 33 RBI and 19 runs scored.
Sizemore, a freshman pitcher, holds a 7-2 record with a 2.91 ERA and 1.38 WHIP over 43 1/3 innings.
The Vikings (37-3) host No. 16 Taft (24-15) in their best-of-three, first-round series. Game 1 is Friday at 2 p.m., and Game 2 is Saturday at noon. Game 3, if necessary, is Saturday at 2 p.m.
Boys track and field
Sacramento Meet of Champions >> Aptos High senior Logan Brantley broke the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League’s all-time shot put mark — a record that stood for six decades — at the Sacramento Meet of Champions at American River College on Saturday.
He took first place in the Invitational shot put in a school-record 58 feet, 10 inches, crushing his previous mark of 56-4 from last week in a dual meet. Soquel’s Don Silva held the county’s previous best shot put mark (57-4.5) since 1965.
Brantley has bettered his school record in three straight competitions and four times this season. He threw 56-3 at the CCS TOP 8 Invitational two weeks ago.
Brantley also placed eighth in the Invitational discus (156-4) in Sacramento, well off his career best of 169-6.
He next competes at the SCCAL Championships at Aptos on Saturday. He’s the league’s defending shot put champ and two-time defending discus champ.
Running
Surfer’s Path Half Marathon >> Paige Kouba, 31, of Santa Cruz and Gage Hornung, 26, of Boulder, Colorado, earned titles at the Surfer’s Path Half Marathon on Sunday.
The 13.1-mile race had runners journey from the Beach Boardwalk in Santa Cruz to Capitola Village and back.
Hornung, who competed in cross country and track and field at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, finished the race, which featured 1,030 runners, in 1:10:32. Noah Brown of Bozeman, Montana, took second in 1:14:08, and Daniel Ridley of Golden, Colorado, took third in 1:14:43.
Santa Cruz’s Miles Johnson was the top local male. He placed ninth overall in 1:21:24.
Kouba, who placed 13th overall, was the top female in 1:22:39. Alex Beckett of San Gregorio was second in 1:24:45, and Kelsey Tierney of San Francisco was third in 1:25:00.
Women’s golf
American Southwest Conference Championships >> UC Santa Cruz’s Olivia Lew and Adeline Truong tied for third place at the American Southwest Conference Championships in Brownwood, Texas, on Sunday.
The Crusaders’ Izzy Crow shot 10-over 226 total for medalist honors at The Hideout Golf Club & Resort. Her teammate, Camryn Kiser, took second at 227.
Lew and Truong finished with 229 totals. The Banana Slugs’ Jiya Dalal and Samantha Shaw tied for sixth with 231 totals.
Mary Hardin-Baylor won the team title with a 43-over 907 total. UCSC took second with a 56-over 920 total. East Texas Baptist (958) took third.
Mary Hardin-Baylor receives the ASC Automatic Qualifier to the NCAA D-III Women’s Golf Championship Tournament in Williamsburg, Virginia, on May 13-17.
High school baseball
At Monte Vista Christian 4, Milpitas 0 >> Winning pitcher Dante Darnell gave up two hits over 6 1/3 innings, and the Mustangs posted a shutout in their nonleague win on Saturday.
Darnell recorded four strikeouts and issued one walk. Reliever Gerard Tershey gave up one hit and one walk over two-thirds of an inning.
It was the sixth shutout pitched by the Mustangs this season.
Sophomore Mikie Melenudo had two hits, two stolen bases, and scored a run. Tyson Shaw, Carter Wright, and Brady Cortez each drove in a run despite not having a hit. Parker Brown had one hit, and Darnell and Jackson Haddad scored runs.
MVC (16-4, 6-2), ranked No. 35 in the Central Coast Section by maxpreps.com, plays at Rancho San Juan (8-12, 2-6) in PCAL Mission Division action on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Fowler 5, Santa Cruz 4 >> Cam Fusari had three hits, two RBI, and a run scored in the Cardinals’ nonleague loss at Kingsburg High on Saturday.
Damos Deworken had hit two hits and a run scored for the Cardinals. Fernando DaCosta had a hit and scored twice.
Ryan Martinez hit a solo home run for the Redcats (16-2). Jerod Smith had two hits and one RBI.
Smith pitched four innings and earned the win. Morgan Toohey threw five innings and took the loss.
At Kingsburg 10, Santa Cruz 4 >> Owen Rogers had two of his team’s eight hits and scored a run in the Cardinals’ nonleague loss on Saturday.
Damos Deworken, Seth Jin, Jason Graff, and Matteo Caltabiano each had a hit and RBI. August Swanson and Jesse Parisi each had a hit and run scored. Deworken also scored a run.
Junior Jensen Hirschkorn had three hits, including two home runs, and five RBI for the Vikings (16-7).
JT Sanchez pitched six innings and earned the win.
Santa Cruz (10-9) hosts Scotts Valley on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
