Each week, The Denver Post provides an update on the Rockies’ path to becoming the worst MLB team in the modern era.

Record through Friday night: 13-56

On Pace for: 31-131

Infamy Tracker: The Rockies got their first walk-off win of the season with an 8-7 victory over the Giants at Coors Field on Thursday, but the endorphin boost didn’t last. The Rockies went to Atlanta on Friday night, pounded out 14 hits, and somehow lost, 12-4. Colorado’s 6-29 record on the road is tied with the 2021 club for the second-worst road record in franchise history after 35 games. The 2005 club was 5-30 after 35 road games.

Where others were after 69 games: 2024 White Sox 17-52; 1962 Mets 19-50; 2003 Tigers 17-52; 1916 Athletics 17-51 (one tie); 1935 Braves 20-49; 1988 Orioles 19-50; 2019 Tigers 25-44; 1932 Red Sox 13-56; 1904 Senators 12-54 (three ties); 1899 Cleveland Spiders 12-57.

Telling statistics: The 1932 Red Sox finished with a minus-349 run differential, the largest in the modern era. Through 69 games, Colorado already has a minus-209 run differential. The Rockies are on pace to finish with a minus-491 run differential, which would obliterate the Red Sox’s all-time black mark.

Coming up: The Rockies are in Atlanta for a three-game weekend series and then head to Washington, D.C., for a four-game series vs. the Nationals. The Rockies were 2-4 vs. the Nationals last season, going 1-2 at home and 1-2 on the road. This season, the Nats took two of three from Colorado at Coors Field in April.

Player to watch: Third baseman Ryan McMahon, Colorado’s lone All-Star last season, is finally starting to heat up. Friday night, he blasted a 441-foot, two-run homer, his third homer in his last seven games after not hitting a home run since May 11. Through Friday, he had reached base safely in eight consecutive games, hitting .400 (10 for 25) with three home runs and three doubles. He’s also reduced his strikeout rate. He has a 19.6% K rate in 11 games in June after a 35.5% K rate in April and a 23.1% rate in May. His 43 strikeouts through the end of April were the most in franchise history during the March/April span.
