OXFORD >> Six times since 2014, Oak Park’s girls team has followed up an Oakland County Meet first-place finish with a state title.

A seventh doesn’t seem so remote after the Knights completed the first step of making that happen for a seventh time at Friday’s county invite, the 65th edition.

Narrow winners of a Rochester-hosted regional that also included plenty of Oakland County teams, as well as Detroit Renaissance, Oak Park dominated in this case to the tune of 110 points.

Walled Lake Northern came the closest to the Knights, finishing second with 67 points, followed by Rochester in third with 49.

No one looked better than Knights senior Morgan Roundtree, who obliterated the meet record in the 300-meter hurdles with a finish in 42.14 seconds, beating the previous best set by Oak Park’s Brianna Holloway (43.61), who was a three-time winner of the event.

“It was a pretty good race,” said Roundtree, whose regional mark of 43.12 was second among D1 state seed times only to Cass Tech’s Lindsay Johnson. “We got some good weather, and I was just feeling good. I’m a senior now, and I’m just glad I left my mark somewhere in the last couple races I’m having. Regionals was OK. I didn’t have the best race, but I knew I was going to make up for it in these last couple meets.

“State, I want to win the 300 hurdles. I want to win all over.”

She’s unlikely to be alone in winning in an Oak Park uniform, if Friday is any indicator.

Roundree also won the 100 hurdles (14.35), closely followed by teammate Carrie VanNoy. Knights freshman Nevaeh Burns took first in the 200 (24.99), as well as the 400 (55.32), where she was trailed most closely by Oak Park junior Dayshana Kellogg, though the field also included some of the best in the state in D1. Knights senior Kylee King was queen of the 800 (2:10.64), winning by over five ticks.

The Knights also won two relays, the 4×100 (47.51) and the 4×400 (3:53.12), both with some degree of cushion.

Northern took second by scattering top finishes in a variety of events, but winning just one, the 4×800 relay (9:35.41). They also had runner-up efforts in the 300 hurdles (Kate Carter), the 800 (Ava Kurczewski), and the 4×400 relay.

Whereas Northern earned points in 11 events, Rochester earned third with standout performances in six events that rewarded the Falcons in the standings.

One came via senior Lena Cleveland in the long jump, who won with an attempt of 18-7.25. She was disappointed with her first three jumps, none of which broke 18 feet, and delivered on her vow to do better in the finals.

Cleveland, who once utilized her athleticism for the school’s storied cheerleading program, just picked up high jump as a junior, ending the season with a fourth-place finish at state. “I’m not going to lie, I just wanted to stop running a lot, so I started jumping, and it ended up working out,” she said with a laugh.

Cleveland jumped 18-8 at regionals on her home field, a mark that has her seeded No. 1 for this year’s state finals.

Another favorite for the top of the podium at state, Farmington Hills Mercy senior Milena Chevallier picked up first in high jump by clearing five feet, six inches. “I’m glad I was able to get first place, but it’s not the height that I wanted,” she said, referring to either the 5-8 she last attempted, or 5-11, her mark that won her the D1 title as a junior.

“We’ve been playing around with the rhythm I take, upping the steps, so I’m just making some adjustments to prepare for state,” added Chevallier, who also has two indoor titles in the event to her name, and is committed to Texas A&M.

Ferndale’s Tyra Thompson (12.74) edged out Groves junior Sheridan Webster by just one-hundredth of a second to win the 100, while the 1,600 produced a number of PRs among a strong field, led by the 1-2 Rochester finishers, Lucy Cook (4:55.13) and Ella Abraham.

The two-mile was won by Stoney Creek sophomore Leah Corby (11:11.04). Ferndale, meanwhile, beat out Clarkston to win the 4×200 relay with a time of 1:44.79.

In pole vault, Ortonville Brandon senior Allison Shelton won first with a throw of 11 feet, six inches, while Farmington senior Faith Moore (37-9.25) won shot put.

Rounding out the field events, Walled Lake Central senior Jordyn Harris had the winning throw in discus (126 feet, two inches).
