Dillon Gabriel threw two touchdown passes and ran for another late score to help third-ranked Oregon hand No. 2 Ohio State its first loss of the season, 32-31 on Saturday night in Eugene, Oregon.
Gabriel, who transferred to Oregon (6-0, 3-0) this season from Oklahoma for the Ducks’ first season in the Big Ten, completed 23 of 34 passes for 341 yards. He also ran for 32 yards on four carries.
Jordan James ran for 115 yards and a score for the Ducks in front of a record crowd of 61,128 for the first matchup between two teams ranked in the top five at Autzen Stadium.
After the victory, the Oregon fans rushed the field and the Ducks’ mascot surfed over their shoulders.
Gabriel scored on 27-yard keeper early in the fourth quarter to give Oregon a 29-28 lead. But Ohio State (5-1, 2-1) responded with a clock-eating drive that ended with Jayden Fielding’s 40-yard field goal that made it 31-29 with six minutes to go.
A pass-interference call got the Ducks to Ohio State’s 9. But after three tries to get into the end zone, Oregon settled for Atticus Sappington’s 19-yard field goal and a 32-21 lead with 1:47 left.
Will Howard hit Emeka Egbuka with a 26-yard pass to pull the Buckeyes closer to field goal range, but an offensive pass-interference call on freshman Jeremiah Smith pushed Ohio State back.
On third-and-20 on the Oregon 38, Howard took off running but gained just 12 yards before time ran out.
Howard threw for 336 yards an two touchdowns for Ohio State . Smith had nine catches for 100 yards and a score in what was the first big test for the Buckeyes this season.
Howard scored on a 1-yard keeper on Ohio State’s opening drive of the game. It was his fifth rushing touchdown of the season, most by a Buckeye in five seasons.
Oregon was able to capitalize when Derrick Harmon forced Quinshon Judkins’ fumble and recovered the ball on the Ohio State 28. Jordan James rushed 25 yards on the first play from scrimmage, then ran the ball the final 3 yards into the end zone — but the Ducks flubbed the snap on the extra point attempt.
Ohio State went up 14-6 on Judkins’ 1-yard run.
Evan Stewart had a 69-yard reception led to his 10-yard touchdown catch to close the gap for Oregon but the 2-point conversion failed.
Oregon took advantage of another Ohio State turnover when Roger Saleapaga recovered Caleb Downs’ fumble. But the Ducks were hurt on the drive when senior receiver Traeshon Holden was ejected from the game for unsportsmanlike conduct when he spit on an Ohio State player.
The drive ended with Sappington’s 27-yard field goal that briefly gave the Ducks a 15-14 lead.
No. 23 ILLINOIS 50, PURDUE 49, OT >> Luke Altmyer threw a 25-yard touchdown pass in overtime to Pat Bryant and Dylan Rosiek sacked Purdue quarterback Ryan Browne on a two-point conversion attempt after the visiting Boilermakers scored a TD to give to give the Illini a Big Ten win.
Ahrmad Branch, on his only carry of the day, scored on a 3-yard run in OT for the Boilermakers.
A 38-yard field goal by Illinois’ David Alano as time expired sent the game into overtime after Purdue rallied from 27-3 and 40-28 deficits in the second half.
Illinois (5-1, 2-1) had lost four straight to Purdue (1-5, 0-3) and seven of the last eight games against the Boilermakers and hadn’t beaten Purdue at Memorial Stadium since 2010.
Altmyer completed 20 of 34 passes for 379 yards and three touchdowns. Josh McCray ran for 78 yards and two TDs and caught a TD pass from Altmyer. Bryant caught four passes for 104 yards.
IOWA 40, WASHINGTON 16 >> Kaleb Johnson rushed for 166 yards and scored three touchdowns as the host Hawkeyes defeated the Huskies, giving coach Kirk Ferentz his 200th victory at Iowa.
Ferentz moved into sole possession of second place on the Big Ten’s all-time wins list, five behind Ohio State’s Woody Hayes.
Johnson, who came into the game ranked second nationally in rushing yards per game and third in rushing yards, had a 6-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to open the scoring for the Hawkeyes (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten). He caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Cade McNamara in the third quarter, then scored on an 8-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Johnson has 12 rushing touchdowns this season.
Washington (4-3, 2-2) got a 5-yard touchdown pass from Will Rogers III to Denzel Boston that tied the game at 7 in the first quarter, then got a 35-yard field goal from Grady Gross 29 seconds before halftime. But the Huskies were shut out for most of the second half, and were stopped three times on fourth down in the half as they tried to rally.
WISCONSIN 42, RUTGERS 7 >> Tawee Walker ran for a career-best 198 yards and scored three touchdowns and the visiting Badgers dominated on both sides of the ball for the second straight week in posting a victory over the Scarlet Knights.
Braedyn Locke threw for 240 yards and a touchdown, and ran for another late as Wisconsin (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) remained unbeaten against Rutgers (4-2, 1-2) in six meetings and handed the Scarlet Knights their second straight loss.
Walker, who previous career high was 146 against Kansas last season, scored on runs of 2, 9 and 55 yards, the last one being the longest of his career and the team’s longest rush of the season.
Walker has eight touchdowns in the past three games. Darrion Dupree also had a 2-yard TD run as the Badgers outgained Rutgers 549-271.
