The reclamation project is complete.
After revitalizing his career with the Vikings, veteran quarterback Sam Darnold has agreed to terms with the Seattle Seahawks. It’s reportedly a three-year, $100.5 million deal for Darnold, with $55 million guaranteed.
Seattle seemed like the likely landing spot for Darnold after the Seahawks traded former franchise quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders over the weekend.
Asked about Darnold last month at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, head coach Kevin O’Connell seemed to indicate that the Vikings could be moving on without him, saying, “He’s in a position where the NFL thinks he can play quarterback at a high level.”
That wasn’t always the case.
Many questioned the Vikings last offseason when they signed Darnold to a one-year, $10 million deal. He went on to vastly outperform his contract, leading the Vikings to a 14-3 record, while completing 66.2 percent of passes for 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns.
That production might have been enough for the Vikings to commit to Darnold long term had it not been for struggles in his last two games.
He crumbled under pressure in a 31-9 loss to the Detroit Lions with the No. 1 NFC playoff seed on the line. Then he couldn’t find a rhythm less than a week later in a 27-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the first round of the playoffs.
Though the Vikings still wanted Darnold back if the price were right, they simply couldn’t justify paying that much for his services with young quarterback J.J. McCarthy waiting in the wings.
A source told the Pioneer Press last month at the NFL Combine that McCarthy is on track as he continues to recover from a torn meniscus and should be ready for organized team activities this spring. That would be a big step in the right direction as McCarthy positions himself to take over for the Vikings under center.
Interestingly, the Vikings will travel to play the Seahawks next season, meaning McCarthy could be in line to face Darnold.
Briefly
In other news, the Vikings also lost backup quarterback Nick Mullens a few hours into the legal tampering period as he reportedly agreed to terms with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
A replacement for Mullens could come in the form of veteran quarterback Daniel Jones, who signed with the Vikings last season and spent time on their practice squad after he was released by the New York Giants.
