



Joseph Espy had 23 points and nine rebounds, and the UC Santa Cruz men’s basketball team beat Lewis & Clark 76-67 at the West Field House in Santa Cruz on Sunday.
Espy, a 6-foot-9, junior forward/center out of Elk Grove, is averaging 20.6 points and 6.8 rebounds through five games.
Senior guard Zino Okah made three 3-pointers and finished with 20 points, nine rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and two steals for UCSC (3-2).
Freshman guard Andrew Ferrara-Jones had nine points and six rebounds for the Banana Slugs, and reserve Caden Breznikar, a junior wing, had eight points and seven rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench.
The Banana Slugs outrebounded the Pioneers 42-19 and committed 21 turnovers against 10 assists.
Senior forward Sam Henderson scored 17 points to lead the Pioneers (2-1).
UCSC plays Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (2-1) at KP Arena in Santa Cruz on Friday at 1 p.m.
Women’s basketball
At Caltech 66, UCSC 56 >> Jenna Gorton produced her second double-double in five game, but the Banana Slugs suffered the road loss to the unbeaten Beavers in Pasadena on Sunday.
Gorton, a 6-foot-5, junior wing/center out of San Diego, finished with 11 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks.
The Banana Slugs (1-4) were outrebounded 39-27 and had more turnovers (17) than they did assists (12).
Sophomore guard Alyssa Jackson made four of her 12 3-point attempts and scored 14 points for UCSC, and junior wing Ariel Anderson had 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists.
Senior guard/forward Kathryn Edwards had 20 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and three steals for the Beavers (3-0), and senior guard Kodie Vondra had 19 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
UCSC plays at Cal Lutheran (1-0) in Thousand Oaks on Friday at 6 p.m.
