Robert Gomez made seven of St. Francis High’s 21 3-pointers to help the Sharks’ boys basketball team roll past King City 91-43 in the teams’ Pacific Coast Athletic League Cypress Division opener in Watsonville on Monday.
Gomez finished with a team-high 25 points for St. Francis (10-3, 1-0), which made 13 3s in the first half and held a 56-17 lead at the break.
It’s the third time this season that the Sharks have scored 90 or more points. They also accomplished the feat against Anzar on Nov. 25 and Cindy Avitia on Dec. 11.Eight Sharks made shots from beyond the arc to help the team shoot 58% (21 for 36) from long range.
Nash Horton made five 3s and scored 21 points. He also had a team-high 10 rebounds, six assists, and five steals. Mason Borrego had 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Jacob Jimenez had nine points and four rebounds.
Timothy Lopez made four 3s and scored 12 points for the Mustangs (1-9). Fernando Camacho made three 3s and scored 11 points, and Antonio Rodriguez scored 10 points.
St. Francis plays at North Salinas (6-5, 0-0) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Soquel 57, at Branham 53 >> Nico Ramirez made four 3-pointers and finished with 15 points in the Knights’ nonleague win in San Jose on Monday.
Chase Petersen scored 11 points for the Knights (6-7), who outscored the Bruins 17-4 in the second quarter for a 27-17 lead at the half. D’Rell Hopkins added seven points.
Junior guard Aiden-Joseph Vietvu scored 13 points for the Bruins (5-7), and senior Carlo Marinucci and junior Daniel Wells each scored 12.
Soquel hosts Christopher (11-1) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Girls basketball
At Watsonville 43, Hollister 39 >> The Wildcatz trailed for the majority of their PCAL Gabilan Division opener, but rallied for the win Monday.
Freshman Isabella Alvarez had 19 points and eight steals for the Wildcatz (11-2, 1-0). Junior Stephanie Martinez had eight points, seven rebounds, and five assists, and classmate Leilani Yasin had seven points and 14 rebounds.
Madelyn Davis scored 10 points for the Haybalers (6-6, 0-1).
Watsonville plays at Everett Alvarez (4-4, 0-0) in Salinas to begin a three-game road trip on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Scotts Valley 48, at Carmel 31 >> Junior guard Brooklyn Williams scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down five rebounds in the Falcons’ nonleague win Monday.
Junior guard Sammy Rebbert scored seven points for the Falcons (8-2), who outscored the Padres 16-2 in the second quarter for a 28-16 lead at the half. Sophomore guard Hanna Shehorn scored six points.
Senior guard Savanna Radowicz scored eight points to lead the Padres (3-6).
Scotts Valley hosts vs James Lick (2-8) of San Jose in nonleague action on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Pajaro Valley 31, at Seaside 18 >> Olivia Contreras made six free throws and scored 14 points, and the Grizzlies opened PCAL Cypress Division play with a big win on Monday.
It’s the Grizzlies’ first win over the Spartans, according to statistics kept by maxpreps.com and mbaypreps.com.
Monique Ayla scored six points for the Grizzlies (3-7, 1-0). Liz Zamora scored five points, and Vero Vazquez chipped in with four points.
Pajaro Valley hosts Greenfield (0-7) on Friday at 7 p.m.
Girls soccer
At Pajaro Valley 2, North Monterey County 0 >> Valeria Acosta and Leslie Carrisoza scored goals, and the Grizzlies won their PCAL Mission Division opener Monday.
Jocelyn Juarez and Scarlet Gomez each had an assist.
It was Pajaro Valley’s eighth straight win, and third straight by shutout.
Goalie Denis Magallon made six saves for the Grizzlies (8-1-0, 1-0-0), who play at Monte Vista Christian (2-4-1, 0-1-0) on Wednesday at 5:45 p.m.
Pacific Collegiate 6, MVC 1 >> Anna Walker-Edwards had two goals and an assist in the Pumas’ PCAL Mission Division opener at Harbor High on Monday.
Ayla Aslanian-Ryon had a goal and two assists for PCS. Eloise Allen, Amelie Pan, and Sanneke Blakeslee also scored for the Pumas. Kaia Gurdak had an assist.
Ashley Drago scored from 25 yards out to narrow the Mustangs’ deficit to 2-1 late in the first half, but the Pumas four answered goals.
On Wednesday, MVC (2-4-1, 0-1-0) hosts Pajaro Valley in a league match, and PCS (3-2-0, 1-0-0) plays at Santa Cruz (1-4-1) in nonleague action.
Boys soccer
At MVC 0, PCS 0 >> Goalie Matteo Montenegro made two saves for the Mustangs in their scoreless draw to PCAL Cypress Division play on Monday.
MVC took eight corner kicks and four shots at the goal.
On Wednesday, PCS (1-1-4, 0-0-1) plays at Scotts Valley (0-2-2) in nonleague action at 3:30 p.m., and MVC (3-3-2, 0-0-1) plays at Gonzales (5-2-2, 1-0-0) at 5:45 p.m.
Men’s basketball
UC Santa Cruz 89, at Colorado 85 >> Junior guard Andrew Ferrara-Jones scored a career-high 39 points, and the Banana Slugs held off the host Tigers in Colorado Springs on Monday.
Ferrara-Jones made eight of his 11 3-point attempts. He also had four rebounds and two steals. His previous career-high of 32 points came against George Fox on Nov. 11.
UCSC (10-8) finished with 32 points in the paint and 22 fast-break points.
Miles Burrows made three 3s and scored 21 points in 25 minutes off the bench for the Banana Slugs. Fellow reserve Caden Breznikar was also huge. He had 12 points and 11 rebounds in 23 minutes.
Junior forward Asher Nofziger had 22 points and a career-high 19 rebounds for the Tigers (4-7). Three of his teammates also reached double digits in scoring: Scott Ruegg (14), Ty Hendler (11) and Orion Samikoglu (11).
UCSC hosts UC Merced (8-5) at KP Arena on Friday at 7 p.m.
Women’s basketball
At East Texas Baptist 76, UCSC 46 >> Sophomore forward Alexa Litchev had nine points and six rebounds, but the Banana Slugs lost in Marshall, Texas, on Sunday to conclude their three-game road trip in the Lone Star State.
Freshman forward Claire Galbo also scored nine points for the Banana Slugs (5-14), who were competitive in the first and fourth quarters, but outscored 42-13 in the middle two quarters.
ETB scored 27 points off of UCSC’s 19 turnovers, and produced 42 points in the paint compared to the Banana Slugs’ 16.
Freshman guard Madison Hurta made three 3-pointers and scored a game-high 17 points for the Tigers (12-3). Junior guard Tiffany Bickford had 11 points and six rebounds, and guard Payton Hicks, a graduate student, had 10 points and eight assists.
UCSC hosts Menlo (5-7) at the West Field House on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Men’s volleyball
At Menlo 3, UCSC 1 >> The Banana Slugs opened their season with a 25-14, 25-17, 24-26, 25-20 loss to the Oaks, competing for the first time as an NCAA Division I program, on Saturday in Atherton.
Kyle Ownbey had 11 kills for UCSC (0-1) and David Polster made 10 kills and six digs. Riley Norman had eight kills and nine digs. Ethan Makishima had five blocks, and Andrew Pak made 24 assists.
Alijah Bermudez made 16 kills to lead the Oaks. (1-0). William Lawler made 36 assists.
UCSC plays Washington & Lee at Cal Lutheran on Friday at 6 p.m.
