Woodies on the Wharf returns for 29th anniversary

The city of Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation and the Santa Cruz Woodies invite you to Woodies on the Wharf, California’s largest display of classic wooden-bodied cars, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the Santa Cruz Wharf.

This free family event features 150-plus beautifully restored woodies, live surf music, Hawaiian dance performances, surfboard shaping demos and sweeping ocean views of Monterey Bay. Guests can enjoy local shops, Wharf dining, vendors and a raffle supporting Wharf programming and events. SLV Water District seeks board applicants

The San Lorenzo Valley Water District Board of Directors is accepting applications to fill a board vacancy following the resignation of Director Jeff Hill.

Applications for the open board seat are available at the San Lorenzo Valley Water District Office located at 13060 Highway 9, online at slvwd.com or by contacting the District Secretary Jennifer Torres at jtorres@slvwd.com or at 831-430-4636. Completed applications must be received by 5 p.m. Thursday. Receipt of your application will be acknowledged.

The board will review and interview applicants before appointing a new director. The seat will be up for election in November 2026 for a new four-year term. The appointee’s partial term will expire following the election.

Mid County Senior Center to host benefit dance

The Mid County Senior Center will be hosting a benefit dance and concert featuring The Plateau Jazz Band, a Prohibition era jazz band, from 7-9 p.m. Friday at 829 Bay Ave.

Cost of admission is $10. Jeff Clark will teach a Charleston Line Dance Class at 6 p.m. free with paid admission to the dance. Mid County Senior Center provides a variety of programs and activities for the local community. Ages 18 and over are welcome to participate in the dances.

Community drumming sessions June 20

Percussionist and educator Jim Greiner is continuing his Third Friday Community Drumming series through 2025 at the Congregational Church of Soquel, 4951 Soquel Drive, Friday from 7-8:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:30. The cost is $10.

Greiner provides hand drums and other percussion instruments, but feel free to bring your own favorites. All levels of experience are welcomed. There will be a few fun and easy tips on playing the instruments for beginners, as well as how to use rhythm to reinforce the positive and powerful patterns of attitude and action — life rhythms — that we want to become habits.

‘Side Track’ exhibition features Jim Potterton

On Friday, San Lorenzo Valley’s Faye G. Belardi Memorial Gallery, 6299 Gushee St., will be debuting the exhibition “Side Track” featuring work by artist Jim Potterton. There will be an opening reception June 28, from 2-4 p.m.

In fall 2024, Potterton’s work was featured on the cover of Railroad Heritage Magazine along with a 10-page article on his paintings and rail trail advocacy entitled “Painting for a Cause” by Elrond Lawrence. Twelve of Potterton’s Rail Art works will be on display in a variety of media, including acrylic, oil, charcoal and graphite. The exhibition will run from June 20 to Sept. 14. Admission is free. Cars and Coffee fundraising for Jacob’s Heart

Join Watsonville Cars and Coffee at the East Lake Village Shopping Center at 936 E. Lake Ave., every Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. This week’s car show will be a fundraiser for Jacob’s Heart, a children’s cancer support services group. The event showcases an amazing collection of classic cars and hot rods at this people-friendly, family-friendly and pet-friendly gathering while also supporting the small local businesses in the shopping center.

Join a lavender wand making class

This annual workshop will show you this ancient technique of lavender wand making June 21 at the Mid County Senior Center, 829 Bay Ave., starting at 10 a.m. until noon. The wands are used in chests, drawers, hung in closets or just put in vases as decorations. The lovely lavender scent lasts for months, and longer if you continue to rub it to crush the leaves inside.

The cost of the class is $20. All materials will be provided for up to two wands per person. The class will be held outside in the gazebo area of the Mid County Senior Center garden. It is always a great deal of fun, so please join and bring a friend.

Join Park Avenue Fitness, 2505 Cabrillo College Drive, Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. for their Senior Open House. Find out how much and how often you should be doing cardio, balance, strength and agility training. Workshops include: Getting off the Floor, Car Smarts, Kitchen Safety and Nutrition and Communication Tips, for hard conversations with adult children, memory tricks, dealing with changing priorities, etc.

Take a journey through time with Vintage Walk

Downtown Santa Cruz is thrilled to announce the inaugural Vintage Walk, inviting locals and visitors alike to explore the vibrant heart of the city and discover unique treasures, June 28, from noon to 4 p.m.

The Vintage Walk offers a unique opportunity to delve into the diverse array of vintage and secondhand shops.
