Re “When will GOP open eyes to climate?” (July 31):

Larry Wilson demonstrates again how serious he is about ‘climate’ change by conflating weather with climate. What better way to drive the hoard of true believers toward the cliff. But liberal Democrats aren’t interested in solutions, only the inevitable crisis they create. Witness their gravitas at our unchecked southern border. But, have no fear! Both political camps truly have a way forward. It’s in our collective best interest to have energy diversity and independence, and to solve the climate crisis, if you will. These issues dovetail in that both require a nuclear energy future. Solar and wind power will never, ever be enough. Once liberal Democrats and Larry Wilson get firmly behind the inevitability of nuclear energy, I will be convinced they are really serious about climate change, and not just political rain.

Re “House passes foolish ‘assault weapons’ ban” (Aug. 3):

I read your editorial against the assault weapons bill in Congress. I appreciate your use of factual data to represent your position. We should all make decisions based upon facts rather than opinions, beliefs, or something we saw on social media or a 24-hour “news” channel. However, your editorial is incomplete. Rather than simply criticizing, offer a solution. Let’s have real discussions based upon scientific evidence. Please follow up this article with a plan to reduce gun violence in America based on factual data of what has worked in this country and elsewhere. Then we can debate and possibly find a solution.

Prop. 13

Re “Revisit Prop. 13 to help unleash our economy” (July 31):

I read the op-ed from Thomas Irwin arguing for Proposition 13 reform and after reading the headline, I decided it must have been written as a parody. One of the main reasons Prop. 13 came to pass in the first place is because low income Californians and retirees on fixed incomes were being taxed out of their homes. This concept is apparently completely lost on Mr. Irwin. California currently has a nearly 100 billion dollar surplus, yet Irwin thinks what we really need is to revise Prop. 13, which would result in a massive tax increase. Gee whiz, why wouldn’t Californians want that?
