Add Boulder to the growing list of cities with striking Safeway workers.

Safeway store number 1615, at Iris Avenue and 28th Street, joined at least 20 other locations when roughly 40 workers at the Boulder store joined the picket line. United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 are striking against Safeway and parent company Albertsons, and are calling for wage increases, stronger health benefits, staffing improvements and vacation for senior workers.

UFCW Local 7 announced last Thursday it did not come to an agreement with the company. Negotiations resumed this Tuesday.

Safeway 1615 is the first reported store in Boulder County to join the strike.

A UFCW Local 7 representative said more stores will join the rolling strike as negotiations continue. The union hopes that will add pressure on the company.

Another of the union’s demands: a price tag integrity team. A union representative said that, in some cases, price tags aren’t being changed in a timely fashion, which means that the actual price of a good that the customer pays at checkout is higher than listed. The union argued it can confidently say this is happening at Safeway stores.

As many as 48 workers picketed in front of the Boulder store midday on a rainy Tuesday, according to the union representative’s estimate, holding signs and chanting, “Strike! Strike! Strike!” They join workers of the grocery store giant in cities along the Front Range from Pueblo to Estes Park, and far to the west in Grand Junction. The total number of striking workers in Boulder wasn’t immediately available, as striking workers have shifts to picket based on the time of day, the union representative said.

Negotiations had continued for months and the lack of a deal has resulted in the state’s second major strike this year after a roughly two-week strike involved about 10,000 workers amid February’s King Soopers walkout.

Allegations of unfair labor practices “are without merit,” said a statement from Heather Palpape, the regional communications and public affairs manager for Safeway.

UFCW Local 7 represents about 23,000 members in Colorado and Wyoming in grocery stores, food processing plants and health care facilities, among other industries, along with barbers and cosmetologists, according to its website.
