Nevada’s Alford to retire after long coaching career

Nevada coach Steve Alford is retiring at the end of the upcoming season, ending a 36-year coaching career that included stops at Iowa, New Mexico and UCLA.

Alford is entering his eighth season at Nevada, where’s gone 137-88 with NCAA Tournament appearances in 2023 and 2024. He is 724-386 overall.

The 61-year-old Alford previously coached at UCLA, leading to the Bruins to consecutive Sweet 16s in 2014-15 during an up-and-down, six-year tenure.

Japan’s Ohashi sets world record in 200 breaststroke

NAGOYA, Japan >> Japanese teenager Shin Ohashi set a world record in the 200-meter breaststroke on Thursday at the Asian Games, swimming a time of 2 minutes, 4.83 seconds.

The old record was 2:05.48 set by Qin Haiyang of China at the 2023 swimming world championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

Infantino pledges openness after sell-off plan dispute

FIFA’s embattled president Gianni Infantino said Thursday he is committed to a fresh culture of openness at the soccer body that is “not about generating positive headlines.”

Two months into a deep rift for global soccer because of Infantino’s now-dropped $4.2 billion World Cup sell-off plan, he offered to his critics this week an independent review of how FIFA is run and makes decisions.

Infantino will chair an Oct. 15 meeting of the 37-member FIFA Council that also will be asked to approve consultation with the 211 member federations and six continental soccer bodies on “how to further strengthen FIFA’s decision-making processes.”

Fury-Joshua fight set for December in Wales

The long-awaited showdown between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua is finally happening. The two former heavyweight world champions are set to meet Dec. 11 in Cardiff, Wales, promoter Turki Alalshikh said Thursday.

Fury stepped out of retirement this year and made his return to the ring for the first time in more than a year with victories against Arslanbek Makhmudov and Mariusz Wach.

Joshua’s only fights since losing his IBF world title fight against Daniel Dubois in 2024 were against YouTuber Jake Paul and Kristian Prenga.

Blue Jackets give center Fantilli $82.5M contract

The Columbus Blue Jackets re-signed center Adam Fantilli to a six-year, $82.5 million contract on Thursday.

Fantilli was a restricted free agent and missed the first week of training camp as the two sides worked on a deal. He becomes the Blue Jackets’ highest-paid player with a contract that averages $13.75 million per year.

Fantilli, 21, was second on the team with 24 goals and was third in scoring with 59 points last season. He is the third player in franchise history with multiple 20-goal campaigns before turning 22.

Blackhawks forward Moore signs five-year deal

The Chicago Blackhawks signed forward Oliver Moore to a five-year deal on Thursday. The deal with the 21-year-old Moore carries an average annual value of $4.25 million.

Moore, a first-round pick by Chicago in the 2023 draft, had five goals and 14 assists in 51 games for the Blackhawks last season while averaging just under 13 minutes of ice time per game.
