Gene left us to play the great organ in the sky April 28, 2025. Born in 1943 to Ray and Marian McMahon, Gene was raised in St. Paul along with brothers Ray, Dan and Brian who predeceased him, and is survived by sisters Marian Turley and Patty Micko (Greg), brother Richard, sisters-in-law Marjorie and Sonja, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Gene graduated from Nazareth Hall High School and went on to receive a BA and MA in Latin from the University of St. Thomas before serving in the US Navy 1968-1974. Upon his discharge, Gene dedicated his life to education, serving in a variety of roles in a number of schools, including vice principal, principal, Latin teacher, and substitute teacher. Gene received a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Minnesota earning the title of "doctor" among his associates.
Gene was also a gifted musician and devout Catholic who shared his musical talent throughout several parishes serving as music director, choir director, and parish organist.
Apart from his professional life, Gene was a vibrant member of a large family. Gene was the common thread among us all and carried news between distant cousins, nieces and nephews far and wide. We will profoundly feel his loss. The same can be said of his many, many friends who can all attest to his quick wit and punny turn of phrase.
